An adult from Hampstead, New Hampshire, died from an eastern equine encephalitis virus infection, health officials announced Tuesday.

“EEEV is a rare but serious disease transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes,” a statement from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said. “DHHS offers our sympathies to the individual’s family and friends.”

The resident was hospitalized due to “severe central nervous system disease,” the statement said.​..

HAMPSTEAD, N.H. – The New Hampshire resident who died from the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus has been identified by family as Steven Perry, 41, from Hampstead.

His family told WBZ that Perry was healthy and had no underlying conditions. He was hospitalized due to severe central nervous system disease and died within in a week.​..

A New Hampshire man is fighting for his life after contracting three mosquito-borne illnesses.

Joe Casey of Kensington, about five miles north of Amesbury, Massachusetts, tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), West Nile virus, and St. Louis encephalitis, according to a GoFundMe page set up for his family.

Casey was first hospitalized on Aug. 8, and it took several days for doctors to determine the cause of his sickness, the GoFundMe page says. The family still does not know which of the three diseases is causing Casey to become so sick.​..

Two Granite Staters have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis virus, a rare but serious disease transmitted through mosquitos.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services reported that an adult from Derry and another from Newmarket were both hospitalized but have since been discharged.​..

A second New Hampshire resident has now died of Eastern equine encephalitis, health officials confirmed Friday.

The state Department of Health and Human Services said in an email that it has identified another New Hampshire resident who tested positive for EEE this year. They said the individual, an adult from Danville, was hospitalized and later died due to their illness. This is the fifth human EEE infection in the state this year, two of which have now been fatal.

The previous death was a resident of Hampstead, which borders on Danville.

All five residents came down with the illness in August, so health officials said the recently-identified infections do not represent newly-acquired disease.​..
