KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-five people are being treated in hospitals nationwide for influenza A (H1N1). Of the total, five are in intensive care units.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican, in his daily updates on the H1N1 situation, said a total of 554 people had been admitted to government and private hospitals nationwide with influenza-like-illness (ILI).

As of 8am yesterday, 150 schoolchildren, staff and 17 National Service trainees in four states were brought to hospitals after they showed ILI symptoms.

All the students were treated as outpatients and sent home after their throat swabs were taken.
Dr Ismail said laboratory results were pending to ascertain if they were infected with H1N1.


The patients comprise:

- 16 pupils and staff of Kolej Yayasan Saad, Ayer Keroh, Malacca

- 11 trainees of PLKN Lagenda in Asahan, Jasin, Malacca

- six trainees of PLKN Tassoh in Perlis

- 15 pupils of Sekolah Pondok Darul Iman in Kuala Berang, Terengganu.

- 35 pupils of SMK Kelibang in Pulau Langkawi, Kedah and

- 84 pupils of SMK Kedawang in Pulau Langkawi, Kedah.

Dr Ismail said initial investigations on the cluster cases from the two schools in Pulau Langkawi showed that the students were not victims of ILI although they were taken to hospital.
In view of the rise in ILI and H1N1 cases nationwide, he advised the public to seek immediate treatment if they had fever, cough, cold and sore throat. People were also advised to stay away from public places until they were fully recovered.

KUALA LUMPUR: Health authorities have reported 57 new cases of influenza-like-illness (ILI) yesterday of which five tested positive for influenza A (H1N1).Two of the H1N1-positive cases are in Malacca while the remaining three are National Service trainees in Penang. All have been given outpatient treatment.

Kedah reported three cluster cases (involving 18 people), Pahang two (18 people), Selangor one (four people), Malacca one (two people) and Penang one (15 people).

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said a total of 591 people had been warded in hospitals as of 5.30pm on Thursday.

Six patients were being closely monitored by doctors in intensive care units because they were suffering complications.


Since many of the cluster cases reported involved school students and NS trainees nationwide, Dr Ismail appealed to parents to take the ministry's advice on H1N1 seriously.

They were advised to closely monitor their children for symptoms of the disease.

Of the eight new cluster cases, two involved schools in Kedah (SMK Sultanah Asma Kota Star) and Pahang (SMA Al-Attas Pekan), and NS camps in Kedah (PLKN Lagenda Sri Negeri in Langkawi), Pahang (PLKN Benum Hill in Raub), Selangor (PLKN GeoKosmo in Sungai Selisek, Hulu Selangor) and Penang (PLKN Kem Syruz, Machang Bubuk in Bukit Mertajam).

"If children showed signs of fever, cough, sore throat and headache, please take them to the nearest clinic or hospital. Early treatment will avert complications," he advised.

He also told parents not to send their sick children to school.

Workers who are sick, especially those having ILI, should not go to work but seek treatment and practise self quarantine at home.

Dr Ismail said people should distance themselves from social activities if they came into contact with the sick.

"Those in the high-risk category must take precautionary measures to avoid being infected," said Dr Ismail.

The ministry also advised all Malaysians who are in the high-risk group to be vaccinated against H1N1. Vaccinations are given free at the ministry's 104 facilities nationwide and details of the facilities are available in the ministry websites.

PENANG, April 10 (Bernama) -- Three National Service (NS) Training Programme trainees at Syruz Camp in Machang Bubok, Bukit Mertajam here are confirmed to have contracted the influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Penang Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the trio were quarantined and treated by the camp's medical officer, adding that they were in stable condition.

"Parents need not worry about their children as the camp management has carried out the relevant procedures," he told Bernama here Saturday.

Three NS trainees down with H1N1 virus


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Three national service trainees based at Kem Syruz in Machang Bubok here have been infected with the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the students, who were in stable condition, have been quarantined in the campsite.

?There is no need to panic as the health authorities have taken necessary steps to keep the situation under control.

?The authorities have also quarantined several other students who have influenza-like illnesses (ILI),? Phee said in an interview yesterday.

Phee, who did not want to reveal the gender of the students, said they could have contracted the virus when they went back home for Qing Ming last weekend.

He said a team of medical officers from the Bukit Mertajam Hospital has been dispatched to the camp to monitor the situation.

The other students, who have been screened and cleared of the virus are continuing with their regular activities.

He added that parents need not fear for their children?s safety as the health authorities and the camp administration have been working closely to monitor the situation.

Phee said these were the first three H1N1 cases reported in the state since January.

Meanwhile, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said there were 62 confirmed Influenza A (H1N1) cases in hospitals, with seven cases being treated in Intensive Care Units.

He said that as of 5.30pm on Friday, there were 617 cases of ILI in the country and the patients were warded in hospitals.

?As of 8am yesterday, the ministry was told of and has received four ILI cluster cases from Johor and Perlis,? he said in a statement yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three detainees in a police lock-up are the latest victims of suspected influenza A (H1N1). They join the list of infected, including schoolchildren, National Service trainees and the public.

The detainees, who showed symptoms of the disease, were among the illegal immigrants held at the Segamat police station lock-up.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said yesterday one of the detainees had been hospitalised while the other two were treated as outpatients.

He said as of 8am yesterday, 14 people, including two pupils, were treated for suspected H1N1.

The two pupils are from SM Datuk Syed Esa, Batu Pahat, Johor.

Six members of a family from Taman Puteri Kluang, Johor, were also suspected to be down with the flu. Two of them have been hospitalised while the rest were treated as outpatients.


Three National Service trainees from the Tasik Meranti camp in Perlis have been hospitalised.

"We are seeing more positive H1N1 cases," Dr Ismail said.

As at 5.30pm on Friday, 617 people have been hospitalised.

Sixty-two were confirmed influenza A patients, with seven placed in intensive care.

Dr Ismail warned Malaysians that the virus was spreading and the people should not take the situation lightly as complacency could lead to fatality.

He said despite the advice, there were still people with symptoms of the disease seeking late treatment.

"I have repeatedly advised the public that they must see a doctor on the very onset of symptoms.

"We have to be on high alert for the second wave, especially with Malaysians being susceptible to infections."

He advised people in the high risk category, including those with diabetes and heart and respiratory diseases, to get themselves vaccinated.

MALACCA: The Health Ministry will continue its open and transparent approach with regards to Influenza A (H1N1).

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said health authorities would not hide anything from the public.

?We have always been open in handling the problem,? he said while urging the public not to believe claims that the country was experiencing a second wave of H1N1.

Such a claim, said Liow, could cause confusion among the public.

?There is no second wave. If there is, we would have said so,? he told reporters here after the launch of the national level World Health Day celebrations yesterday.

Although the current level of infections were much lower than last year, he said health authorities would keep a close eye on the situation.

At present, only 1.14% of those seeking out-patient treatment at government hospitals and clinics tested positive for H1N1 compared to more than 10% last year, which was considered pandemic level, he said.

On the present figures, he said 23 new cases of influenza like illness (ILI) were recorded as of yesterday with a total of 651 people warded.

Of that, 85 tested positive for H1N1 with six patients warded in the intensive care unit of various hospitals, he said.

He urged those in the high-risk category to get free H1N1 vaccine available at 114 government hospitals and clinics nationwide.

KUALA LUMPUR: Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said four new cluster ILI cases have been detected in Johor, Pahang and Malacca.

In Johor, a family of three from Taman Johor and three siblings from another family in Gelang Patah were also admitted to hospital for suspected H1N1.

In Pahang, 20 prisoners and a staff of Penor Jail, Kuantan were taken to hospital when they showed symptoms of the disease.

The prisoners were given outpatient treatment and placed in an isolation room in the prison with a prison medical team monitoring them. The prison staff was sent home after they were given outpatient treatment at the same hospital.

In Malacca, two children in a family residing at Taman Bemban Utama, Jasin have been hospitalised of whom one has been confirmed positive fo H1N1..

?We are waiting for laboratory results to ascertain if the victims were positive for the disease,? said Dr Ismail.

As at 8.30pm last Sunday, there were 677 people admitted to hospitals nationwide of whom 58 were confirmed positive for H1N1. Four of the confirmed cases were treated in intensive care units. Death toll stands at 80.

With the National Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan (NIPPP) having been put in place by the Health Ministry following the rising number of the Influenza A(H1N1) cases, members of the H1N1 technical committee will meet by Wednesday to be updated on the current situation, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

The NIPPP document serves as a time-bound guide for preparedness and response plan for influenza pandemic. It provides a policy and strategic framework for a multisectoral response and contains specific advice and actions to be undertaken by the Health Ministry at the different levels, other governmental departments and agencies and non-governmental organisations.

This is to ensure that resources are mobilised and used most efficiently before, during and after an Influenza pandemic episode.

Liow said all government departments, agencies, hospitals and the public will have to be on high alert and report cases of people down with H1N1.

Although the situation is not as serious as when the pandemic broke out in April last year, we are not taking the current situation lightly.

?We need to put in place the NIPPP and concentrate on the mitigation phase of treating people with symptoms of the disease,? he told reporters after the launch of the Healthcare Tourism Congress 2010 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

He said all State and district health directors and officers have been told to intensify their awareness campaigns so that people, especially children and those in the high risk group, would seek early treatment when suffering from fever, cough, running nose, sore throat and other symptoms such as headache, body ache, vomiting and diarrhoea.

?We also want people with chronic diseases, respiratory problems, asthma, kidney problems, heart diseases and pregnant women to get the vaccination to protect themselves against complications arising from the disease. The disease if untreated can kill,? warned Liow.


He said the best way to prevent getting the disease was through personal hygiene and washing of hands regularly with soap and water or the use of hand sanitizer.

?Please carry your ?H1N1 kit?. If in public places, wear face mask if you are amidst sick people,? he said, adding that social distancing should be adhered to when with sick people.

The ministry will strengthen the vaccination drive to get as many people with co-morbid conditions to get the vaccine dose, free of charge, at the 104 identified government facilities nationwide.

PUTRAJAYA, April 13 (Bernama) -- Another death due to Influenza A (H1N1) was reported in the country yesterday involving a 42-year-old lawyer from Johor.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said today the man died while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Johor Baharu.

He said it was the first death due to H1N1 this year, bringing the death toll to 78 since the outbreak last year.

"Laboratory tests confirmed that the man was infected with the H1N1 virus. Being obese, he had other complications, including acute renal failure and viral infection.

"He died of H1N1 with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital yesterday," he told reporters after chairing a H1N1 epidemic technical committee meeting here.

Dr Ismail said two deaths reported at Melaka Hospital on March 31 and April 2, respectively involving Maimunah Dimah, 54, and her daughter, Sumarni Mat Nor, 29, were not due to H1N1.

"Two of the three deaths reported this year are not directly related to H1N1. Only the recent one (yesterday) is related to H1N1," he said.

He said continuous monitoring by the ministry revealed that the current H1N1 virus did not have different characteristics which could trigger a second wave of H1N1.

"Hence, the proposed prevention measures and early treatment using the antiviral medicines should be effective to curb the spread of the disease," he said.

As at 5.30pm yesterday, Dr Ismail said, 678 patients with influenza-like-illness (ILI) were still being treated in hospitals nationwide.

Of the total, 66 cases were tested positive for H1N1, while five were being treated in the ICU.

"We want to make it clear that the H1N1 is still active not only in Malaysia, but also in the region and the world.

"There is indeed an increase of H1N1 cases reported in the country, including the number of those tested positive for the disease as well as cluster incidents," he said.

Nevertheless, he said, the increase had yet to reach the same level of the first wave.

Dr Ismail said those who had been showing symptoms of ILI for over 48 hours or were tested positive in the influenza rapid test, should be given immediate treatment without having to undergo H1N1 conformation tests.

Public urged to take precautions as H1N1 claims another victim


PUTRAJAYA: A 42-year-old lawyer died of Influenza A(H1N1) on Monday, barely two weeks after two women died from complications from influenza-like illness.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the man died at a private hospital in Johor Baru where he was admitted on April 4, after showing symptoms for nine days.
Laboratory test showed that the victim, who was in the high-risk category, was infected with A(H1N1) and suffered from several complications such as acute kidney failure and sepsis.
?He was treated at the Intensive Care Unit but his condition took a turn for the worse and he died on April 12. The cause of death was H1N1 pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome,? Dr Ismail told a press conference yesterday.

Dr Ismail said the two earlier deaths reported were not ?part of the statistics as their deaths were not directly related to H1N1?.

Early this month, it was reported that a 29-year-old pregnant woman and her elderly mother from Malacca had died of Influenza A(H1N1).

According to the Health Ministry, 678 cases of influenza-like illness were treated at hospitals nation*wide as of Monday, with 66 people confirmed to have been infected with A(H1N1). Five were warded in the ICU.

Dr Ismail stressed that the country was not experiencing a second wave of A(H1N1), adding that if that was to happen, it would be different with a more virulent virus.

?Even though we are not facing a second wave, the ministry has already prepared for it since the A(H1N1) pandemic broke last year.

?The public, however, can reduce the possibility of getting infected by taking the necessary precautions, including taking care of their health and personal hygiene,? he said.

Meanwhile, family members of the lawyer tried their best to save him and, as a last resort, transferred him to a hospital in Singapore.

A close family member, who declined to be named, said the victim, Harith Fansuri Abdul Rahman, 42, was first admitted to a private medical centre in Johor Baru but transferred to the island republic when his health deteriorated.

She said Harith initially only showed flu-like symptoms but later complained that he could not stand the pain and wanted to be admitted to a hospital.

?He was coughing blood when he was admitted to the hospital,? she said, adding that the doctor had initially told the family there was nothing to worry about.

?He died at the hospital in Singapore even before they had a chance to treat him,? she said after attending Harith?s funeral at the Kebun Teh Muslim cemetery yesterday evening.

Private docs told to give appropriate advice to patients

PUTRAJAYA: Private doctors should tell patients with flu-like symptoms to go for further tests at government hospitals, the health ministry said.

Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican urged all doctors to provide the appropriate advice to patients showing symptoms linked to the Influenza A(H1N1) so they could seek the necessary treatment immediately.

Dr Ismail said the ministry discussed the matter at its meeting on the Influenza A(H1N1) on Tuesday, and felt it needed to issue the reminder following complaints from the public over doctors who failed to advise them to go to a hospital for tests.

?We want the doctors to provide the right advice when they see patients showing flu-like symptoms, and we are concerned after some patients complained they were not given the right information,? he told a press conference on Wednesday here to announce the 16th Scientific Conference and Trade Exhibition.

The conference and exhibition, organised jointly by the ministry and the Malaysian Association of Orthodontists, will be held in Kuching from Apr 24-28.

Dr Ismail earlier called on more local universities to provide orthodontology courses, as the country needed 70 more orthodontists from the current 117.

He said the courses were only available at Universiti Malaya and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and the intakes were small due to its highly specialised nature.

On the dengue outbreak, Dr Ismail said efforts were being made to reduce the number of dengue cases.

Among the efforts the ministry would take, he said, was to ensure that doctors were better informed and did not miss the symptoms linked to dengue, as delay in providing the right treatment could result in death.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has directed all schools and institutions to set up isolation rooms for those with influenzalike illness (ILI) following the rise in the number of ILI cluster cases involving schoolchildren.

The ministry detected seven new ILI cases here and in Johor, Pahang and Negri Sembilan. Most of these cases involved schoolchildren.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said hostel wardens should isolate their students when they showed symptoms of the disease.

?They must be isolated until they fully recover,? he said at the daily H1N1 press conference here yesterday.

The new ILI cluster cases were:

? SK Parit Maimon in Batu Pahat, Johor (four pupils);

? MRSM Parit Sulong Johor (four students);

? SM Teknik Batu Pahat Johor (one student with ILI symptoms and seven others with upper respiratory tract infection);

? Pinggiran Pelangi national service camp in Muadzam Shah, Rompin, in Pahang (39 trainees treated as outpatients and placed under isolation at the hostel);

? SK Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur (10 pupils, of whom six were confirmed to have influenza A (H1N1). One was admitted to hospital while the rest were treated as outpatients);

? SBP Integrasi Selandar, Jasin (four pupils); and

? Kolej Tunku Kurshiah, Seremban (13 students have been treated and isolated in the college hostel?s sick bay).

Dr Ismail said: ?Almost all the children were treated as outpatients and isolated in their homes or hostels.?

He said although throat swab samples were taken from all the affected students, most of the laboratory results had yet to be released.

He said parents, guardians and school authorities should take measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Influenza A(H1N1): 20 students quarantined




KUANTAN: Twenty students of Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi (SBPI) Kuantan here are being quarantined at their hostel for having symptoms of Influenza A (H1N1).

Pahang Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the students were down with fever and flu.

"They have been given anti-viral treatment," he said when contacted here today.

He said blood samples of the affected students had been taken and sent for laboratory tests at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

He advised the students' parents not to panic as the situation at the schools was under control. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Five states -- Malacca, Selangor, Pahang, Johor and Penang -- have been put on high alert for influenza A (H1N1) after many clusters of suspected and confirmed cases were reported there over the past few weeks.

The Health Ministry has directed state health directors and district health officers in the affected states to put in place the mitigation phase action plan to contain spread of the disease.

Yesterday, 11 new influenza-like illness (ILI) cluster cases were reported, involving a total of 72 people in the five states.

Of the total number of patients, 16 have tested positive for H1N1 so far.

Test results on the others, including 35 schoolchildren whose throat swab samples have been sent to laboratory, are pending.

The 11 new cluster cases involved four schools: SMK Kuala Kubu Baru (Selangor), SJK (C) Chong Hwa in Senggarang, Batu Pahat, and SM Vokasional Batu Pahat (both in Johor) and SBP Integrasi Indera Mahkota in Kuantan.

"Although we have not been hit by the second wave, which is more serious, we have to be on alert with the people being susceptible to the infection," Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said yesterday.

As of 5.30pm on Wednesday, a total of 528 people were in hospitals nationwide with ILI symptoms, of whom 68 had been confirmed positive for H1N1. Of those confirmed, eight were in intensive care units.

Since May last year, a total of 12,971 people had been infected with H1N1, with the death toll at 81.

More ILI cluster cases detected in four states

PUTRAJAYA: Health authorities have recorded 10 cluster cases of Influenza-like illness (ILI) in Johor. Pahang, Selangor and Malacca between Friday and Saturday morning.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the cases involved 48 people, of whom seven were already confirmed to be infected with Influenza A (H1N1) while the rest were still waiting for laboratory test results.

Among the places which had cluster cases were SK Leban Condong in Rompin, Pandan Damai in Kuantan, MRSM Ayear Paabas in Alor Gajah and MRSM Kuala Kubu Baru in Hulu Selangor.

"Treatment has been administered to those affected, including the anti-viral treatment," he said in a statement on Saturday.

Dr Ismail said as on Friday evening, 525 patients were treated for ILI in hospitals nationwide, of whom 70 were confirmed to have been infected with A(H1N1).

"Twelve patients, 10 of them in the high risk category, are warded in the Intensive Care Unit.

"The ministry is reminding the public that the spreading and infection of A(H1N1) is still very much active.

"The public must take necessary precaution and measures to ensure they do not get infected easily. This include keeping high personal hygiene standards," he said.

He added that those in the high risk category could get vaccinated at the 104 government health facilities nationwide apart from private clinics and hospitals.

H1N1 survivor baby to grow up in large family

TANGKAK: The baby girl who was delivered by Caesarean section even as her mother lay dying of Influenza A(H1N1) earlier this month is doing fine.

Baby Noralia Qalisyia Mustazah, who is 17 days old, is being looked after by her father Mustazah Sarmat?s family in Kampung Teluk Rimba near here.

Mustazah, 29, said his mother, Jamilah Lebar, asked him to bring the baby and his other three-year-old daughter, Noraina Batlisyia, from Malacca where he was living.

?My parents? house has seven bedrooms. Several of my sisters and a sister-in-law are living in the house.

KUALA LUMPUR: Another five confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) were reported yesterday, one of them a kindergarten pupil in Damansara Perdana, Selangor.

The other four were from three families in Pahang, Malacca and Selangor, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican.

All those infected are now being treated with anti-viral medication, he said in a statement.

The total number of confirmed cases since last year has reached 13,088.

Although there have been no new reports of deaths, he reminded the public to be wary of crowded places as the virus continues to be active in the community.

"Members of the public who are in the high risk group like pregnant women and those who suffer from chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes and kidney and heart conditions, should get the vaccination soon," he said, adding that they could do so in any of the 104 facilities provided by the ministry throughout the country.

Several private practitioners when contacted, said they, too, were seeing many patients with influenza-like illnesses and were treating them accordingly and those with co-morbid health conditions were being referred to the nearest government hospitals.

39 new H1N1 cases detected

PUTRAJAYA, Sun -- Some 39 new Influenza A (H1N1) cases have been detected up to 5.30pm yesterday, taking total accumulated cases to 13,127.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said no deaths were reported while the number of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) remained at 12.

"There are 534 Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases nationwide of which 70 or 13.1 per cent have been confirmed positive A (H1N1)," he said in a statement here today.

He said up to 8am today, six cases of ILI cluster were reported in four states namely Johor, Pahang, Perak and Perlis.

They include at Sri Merdeka Kindergarten in Taman Merdeka, Batu Pahat, Johor, Indera Pahlawan National Service Camp clinic in Jengka 6, Maran, Pahang and the Immigration Department Quarters in Padang Besar, Perlis.

The public has been urged to take preventive measures while pregnant women and those suffering from asthma, diabetes, kidney and heart ailments should receive H1N1 vaccines at 104 facilities.

Dr Mohd Ismail said monitoring found that the vaccine was save and did not result in serious side effects.

12 new cases confirmed



MALAYSIA (April 18, 2010) : The Health Ministry has confirmed 12 new cases of A(H1N1) in the country.

In a statement on the ministry's website today, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican (pix) said six new cluster cases of A(H1N1) were identified in the states of Johor, Pahang, Perak and Perlis.

He said nine students at SM Agama Ad-Diniah Al-Islamiah in Kuala Kangsar, two from SJKC Sin Hwa in Taman Maju, Batu Pahat and one person from the Immigration Headquarters at Padang Besar, Perlis, tested positive for the viirus.

One of the students from Kuala Kangsar and all those who tested positive from Batu Pahat and Padang Besar have been admitted into hospital and are being treated with anti-virals.

Eighteen more samples from locations in Johor, Pahang and Perak are awaiting results on H1n1 tests.

The public have been urged to take preventive measures while pregnant women and those suffering from asthma, diabetes, kidney and heart ailments should receive H1N1 vaccines at 104 facilities.
