Sars in 2003, ?bird flu? in 2006 and the outbreak of the tropical fever in Italy last summer show that infectious diseases can spread with alarming speed and have little respect for international borders.

In Stockholm, an important step forward was taken in strengthening Europe?s defences against the spread of such infectious diseases ? the EU?s new Emergency Operations Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
