NEW DELHI: It's official. Compared to the past several years, Delhi has registered a record-breaking growth in its mosquito population this season.

With the Capital now passing through what the health authorities here describe as "its worst phase" registering a record growth in the index of "mosquito breeding", health officials have warned of a sharp increase in cases of dengue, malaria and chikungunya this season if the breeding of mosquitoes is not brought to a halt through awareness and collective action.

A worried State Health Department has sounded a "mosquito alarm'' and identified high-risk zones in the Capital including Najafgarh, Paschim Vihar, Pitampura, Rohini, Sadik Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Amar Colony and Karol Bagh areas.

``It's true that this season Delhi has registered a record high index of mosquito breeding compared to the figures available with us of several years.

This in turn is resulting in large number of dengue and malaria cases coming to various city hospitals.

We have so far registered 66 cases of dengue reported in Delhi, of which 43 are from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and other States. Six cases were fatal of which two were from Delhi.

Areas in the Capital that have recorded large number of dengue cases include Karol Bagh (14), Shahdara-North (6), Shahdara-South (7) and Najafgarh (17).

Sounding the alert in the city, the health authorities said a special drive to check breeding of the vector has been launched. The high index of dengue vector mosquito breeding was responsible for the spreading the diseases, they said.

In the wake of rise in breeding of Aedes mosquito, the Health Department has appealed to heads of government departments, autonomous bodies, educational institutions, owners and occupiers of commercial complexes, office-bearers of market and residents' welfare associations and citizens to take adequate steps to prevent mosquito breeding.
