On August 4, 2023, the US informed PAHO/WHO of a case of human infection with a new variant of the influenza A(H1N2) virus in Michigan.

The case was confirmed by the CDC on August 2 by RT-PCR.

The patient, under 18 years of age, became ill on July 29 with respiratory symptoms and general malaise.

He was seen at the emergency room on July 29 and a sample was collected on July 30, which was positive for influenza A.

Received oseltamivir on August 1st. Sample tested July 31 at MDHHS positive for influenza A but not for H1pdm09 or H3 subtypes.

CDC confirmed on August 2 that it was a variant influenza A(H1N2) virus after RT-PCR analysis and viral isolation.

Epidemiological investigation pointed to exposure to pigs at an agricultural fair from July 23 to 29.

There was no hospitalization or sustained human-to-human transmission.

First case of H1N2v in the US in 2023. Since 2005, 512 cases of variant influenza A, including 37 of H1N2v.​
