The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) Pediatric Early Warning Sentinel Surveillance (PEWSS) has detected Adenovirus, Parainfluenza 2, and RSV for the week ending November 13, 2010. Adenovirus and Parainfluenza 2 each comprised 8%, and RSV 17%, of the total number of specimens tested. All of these viruses were observed from different patient specimens.

PEWSS has not detected Influenza A or B in southern Nevada since August 2010.

Re: Nevada 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 45-3

Week 3:
Washoe County:
ILI: 3.2%
24 new cases
Fourteen death certificates were received for week 1 listing pneumonia (P) or influenza (I) as a factor contributing to the cause of death. The total number of deaths submitted for week 1 was 86. This reflects a P & I ratio of 16.3% which is above the epidemic threshold set by CDC for week 1 at 7.8%. The national P & I for week 1 was at the epidemic threshold at 7.5%.

Southern Nevada Health District:
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) Pediatric Early Warning Sentinel Surveillance (PEWSS) has detected
Influenza A 2009 H1N1, Influenza A H3, Influenza B, and RSV for the week ending January 22, 2011.

We observed an increase in the number of patient specimens submitted in the past three surveillance periods,
which may indicate that sentinel sites are encountering more ill patients who can provide test specimens. The continual
detection of Influenza A and B, and RSV in Southern Nevada is consistent with national trends for this time of
year.

At the national level, testing for antiviral drugs resistance since October 1, 2010 revealed no resistance against
oseltamivir or zanamivir for Influenza A (H1N1 and H3) or Influenza B. However, adamantanes show high levels of
resistance to Influenza A, and have no effect on Influenza B.

33% positive for influenza

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) Pediatric Early Warning Sentinel Surveillance (PEWSS) has detected Influenza A 2009 H1N1, Influenza A H3, Influenza B, Adenovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Parainfluenza 3, and RSV for the 2010-2011 Influenza Week 10 ending March 12, 2011.Influenza and RSV activity has decreased over the past three weeks, indicating the likely end of influenza and RSV seasons in Southern Nevada. These trends are consistent with past seasons. The detection of Adenovirus and Parainfluenza 3 in recent weeks may signal the seasonal emergence of these two respiratory pathogens. In addition, Human Metapneumovirus was identified locally for the first time since June of 2010.

Southern Nevada Health District
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) Pediatric Early Warning Sentinel Surveillance (PEWSS) has detected
Influenza A H3, Influenza B, Adenovirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Parainfluenza 1, Parainfluenza 3, and RSV for the
2010-2011 Influenza Week 12 ending March 26, 2011.

Seven of the ten respiratory pathogens that are routinely monitored by PEWSS were detected this week. This
suggests that the levels of respiratory viruses circulating in Southern Nevada remain very high.

Human Metapneumovirus continued to be detected this month. Infected persons may be asymptomatic and
range of symptoms include severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Seroprevalence studies conducted in the Netherlands
revealed that all children ≤ 5 years of age had evidence of past infections by this virus. Although Human
Metapneumovirus infection is prevalent during infancy and early childhood, recent studies also highlight its role
in causing respiratory illness in adults, particularly among the elderly who reside in long term care facilities
