Small swans with influenza fly away later from our country then healthy swans. This becomes clear from research where 25 small swans from the Wieringermeer participated to. The sickness which the birds under the wings had was a mild avian influenza virus, not dangerous for people.
The investigation has been conducted by the Dutch institute for ecology (NIOO) and the Erasmus university Rotterdam. For the research 25 swans in the Wieringermeer were caught. Twelve swans provided a neck link with sender.
Two of the swans were sick. The healthy swans left by the end of December from the Wieringermeer, the sick swans with flu symptoms went largely a month later on the wings.
