Netherlands reports 2nd BSE case this year

After routine testing BSE was confirmed in a 10-year-old cow. This is the first time in 2 years in the Netherlands.

BSE aangetroffen bij controle in slachthuis

Bij een reguliere controle in een slachthuis heeft de Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit een geval van BSE vastgesteld.

Het gaat om een tien jaar oude koe, die inmiddels uit de voedselketen is gehaald. Het is de eerste keer in ruim twee jaar, dat er BSE wordt aangetroffen bij een koe. Het laatste geval was in mei 2008. Het Centraal Veterinair Instituut stelt niettemin dat de komende jaren vaker een positieve uitslag valt te verwachten.

Volgens een woordvoeder van het ministerie van landbouw geeft de vondst geen aanleiding voor maatregelen. Vorig jaar werden in Nederland 405.000 runderen op BSE getest.

Cow tests positive for BSE

AMSTERDAM - A 10-YEAR-OLD cow in the Netherlands has tested positive for BSE, more commonly known as 'mad cow' disease, the first such result in more than two years, the Dutch government said on Friday.

The government ministry responsible for food quality said the animal tested positive for the brain-wasting disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy at a slaughterhouse.

It was the first positive test for BSE in the country since May 2008, the ministry said in a statement. A spokesman for the ministry told Reuters the cow's meat was withdrawn from the food chain after a first positive test, while a second test confirmed the result.

Bij een 11,5-jarige koe op een melkveebedrijf in Grijpskerke (gemeente Veere, Zeeland) is Bovine Spongiforme Encephalopathie (BSE) geconstateerd. Deze besmetting is het 86e geval in Nederland sinds 1997 en het eerste geval in 2010. Het is het eerst geconstateerde BSE-geval in de provincie Zeeland.

De koe is geboren op 10 maart 1999 op een bedrijf in Friesland (Kollumerpomp) en is twee dagen later overgebracht naar het bedrijf in Zeeland, waar het dier haar hele leven heeft doorgebracht. Het dier is op 27 augustus 2010 ter slachting aangeboden. De in het kader van de actieve surveillance uitgevoerde snelle BSE-test werd positief bevonden. Op 28 augustus bleek ook de snelle test uitgevoerd op het Centraal Veterinair Instituut positief. Op 3 september 2010 verliep ook het bevestigingsonderzoek positief.

Bij geen van de andere runderen op het bedrijf waar de besmetting is vastgesteld zijn verschijnselen van BSE aangetroffen. Zoals gebruikelijk wordt een onderzoek ingesteld naar het voer, met name naar het voer gegeten in de eerste levensmaanden. Alleen de risicodieren zullen worden geruimd. Dat zijn dieren die in dezelfde tijd als het besmette rund op hetzelfde bedrijf zijn geboren of hetzelfde voer hebben gegeten en de nakomelingen van het besmette rund jonger dan twee jaar. Gezien de leeftijd van de positieve koe betreft het een zeer klein aantal (2) dieren.

BSE can be found in older cows, mostly those born in 1996 of 1997 . No BSE was found in cows born after 2001; most cows are born later than 2001.

THE HAGUE (BNO NEWS) -- A 13-year-old cow in the Netherlands on Thursday was found to be infected with BSE, which is commonly known as 'mad-cow disease', according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

Thursday's case is the second case of BSE in the Netherlands since May 2008. The other case was reported on September 3 when a cow was diagnosed with BSE at a farm in Tilburg, near the border with Belgium.

The ministry on Thursday said the cow had died on a farm in country, but did not reveal where the farm was located. "We can expect to see several more BSE-cases during the next few years," the ministry said in a statement.

This is because a number of cows are still alive from before a European Union feed ban went into effect on January 1, 2001. That ban prohibits certain animal products from being fed to cows, which can lead to BSE being spread among cows.

The Netherlands tested around 405,000 cattle in 2009, while around 7.5 million cattle were tested throughout the European Union. A total of 67 BSE cases were found, all of which were outside of the Netherlands.

The ministry said there is no need to take action because cows cannot infect each other with BSE. "But, as usual, the animals who were born on the same farm around the same time as the infected animal or ate the same food will be examined, as well as their offspring."

BSE bij koe in Brabant

Bij een dertienjarige koe in het Brabantse Odiliapeel (gemeente Uden) is BSE vastgesteld.

Het dier is op 4 oktober op het bedrijf overleden. Het BSE-geval is aan het licht gekomen dankzij de tests bij kadavers. Het is het tweede BSE-geval dit jaar in Nederland.

De besmette koe is op 4 juni 1997 - voordat het diermeelverbod van kracht werd - geboren op het bedrijf waar het nu nog stond. Op het bedrijf worden drie andere dieren uit voorzorg geruimd. Het gaat om één nakomeling jonger dan twee jaar en twee oudere koeien, die het zelfde voer hebben gegeten in als de besmette koe tijdens haar eerste levensmaanden.

Tot nu toe zijn in Nederland 89 BSE-gevallen vastgesteld. Twee daarvan betroffen Belgische dieren die in Nederland werden geslacht. Daarnaast is in het buitenland bij zeven van oorsprong Nederlandse dieren BSE aangetroffen.

Verreweg de meeste besmette dieren zijn geboren in 1996 (32) of 1997 (14). Tot nu toe is in Nederland geen BSE vastgesteld bij dieren die zijn geboren na 2001.
