First patient with monkeypox (monkeypox) in the Netherlands

Publication date 20-05-2022 | 18:30

This afternoon, a patient was diagnosed with monkeypox for the first time in the Netherlands. Researchers showed with a PCRpolymerase chain reaction-test that the person did indeed have monkeypox. In recent days it has already been announced that several people in Europe have tested positive for this disease. People in Portugal, Great Britain and Belgium, among others, were found positive for the virus.

Monkeypox, often referred to as monkey pox, is caused by a virus that is mainly found in West and Central Africa. The virus occurs in rodents, but humans can also be infected. The symptoms after an infection are usually mild.

Multiple patients possible
RIVM expects that even more people may have been infected in the Netherlands. An update on any newly discovered infections will follow after the weekend.

Monkeypox (monkeypox)

Change date 21-05-2022 | 14:50

We have found a few patients in the Netherlands with monkeypox. We continue to investigate other possible infections. An update with more information will follow on Monday.

Monkeypox, often referred to as monkeypox or monkeypox virus, is a viral infection that mainly occurs in western and central Africa. Sometimes a traveler from that region comes to Europe with this disease. This zoonosis (disease that can be passed from animals to humans) mainly occurs in rodents in Africa. The disease is usually mild in humans.

Monkeypox is different from impetigo (a skin infection caused by a bacterium, which often occurs in the Netherlands). In Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and Suriname, the name monkey pox is often used for this disease impetigo.

Reporting monkey pox infection necessary to fight virus properly

News item | 21-05-2022 | 14:50

On May 20, 2022, the first infections with the monkeypox virus were also confirmed in the Netherlands. More infections are expected to be found in the coming days. The disease is today classified as A disease. This means that new infections or suspicions thereof must be reported immediately. This will prevent further spread of the virus.

The RIVM has advised to classify monkeypox as an A disease. Minister Kuipers of Health, Welfare and Sport is following this advice. This makes it mandatory for doctors to immediately report the disease and the suspicion of it . In this way, new cases can be detected and isolated as early as possible and measures such as quarantine can also be taken for their contacts. It expressly concerns the approach of individual cases. No general collective measures are to be expected.

People with (a suspicion of) monkey pox are requested to go into home isolation. They can be tested. If the test result is negative, the isolation can be lifted. If they are positive, they are asked to remain in isolation until the disease is no longer contagious. That is when the skin is completely healed.

Dutch Monkeypox cases more than double to 26, says RIVM

Some 26 residents of the Netherlands have now tested positive for monkeypox, said Dutch public health institute RIVM. The announcement on Monday was more than double the total revealed in the last update five days earlier, when 12 people were known to be infected with the virus. The first case diagnosed in the Netherlands was announced on May 20.

There are two known strains of the monkeypox virus, and both originate in Africa. The virus has been spreading in an outbreak across Europe. Many of those infected have not recently set foot in Africa, and have not had a direct connection to someone who spent time there in the past few months...

Monkeypox cases diagnosed in the Netherlands doubles in a week to 54

The monkeypox virus has been diagnosed in 54 people in the Netherlands, an increase of 14 since Thursday. To date, all of those people diagnosed with the viral infection in the Netherlands are men who engage sexually with other men, the RIVM said on Tuesday. Last Monday, the tally was at 26 cases, which indicates the number of confirmed infections has more than doubled in a week.

Some of the infections can be traced back to an outbreak at the Belgian festival, Darklands, a fetish event. Health authorities emphasized that anyone can get monkeypox after close contact with someone who is infected, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Sixty cases of monkeypox now in the Netherlands

Sixty people in the Netherlands have tested positive for the monkeypox virus in recent weeks, according to the latest tally on Thursday. The week before, the counter stood at 40 cases. All known patients so far are men who have sex with other men, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) said on Thursday.

More cases of monkeypox as RIVM experts meet to discuss options
Health June 22, 2022

The number of people in the Netherlands with confirmed cases of monkeypox has risen to 167, compared with 95 six days ago, public health institute RIVM said on Wednesday.

The long incubation period is making it difficult to calculate how far the infection has spread and a new update will follow on Friday, the RIVM said.

RIVM experts are meeting on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the situation and may make recommendations later in the week, broadcaster NOS reported....

Monkeypox virus diagnosed in a child in the Netherlands for the first time

Darlene Breaking News

The monkeypox virus was first diagnosed in a child in the Netherlands. It concerns a child of primary school age, says a spokesman for the RIVM.

It is not yet known how the child contracted the virus. “Given the symptoms, there is in any case no suspicion of abuse,” said the spokeswoman. “A source and contact investigation has been carried out and those involved have been informed.”

The RIVM informs NU.nl that children who have had direct contact with someone who has tested positive for the monkey pox virus or who have been close to that person are now being advised to keep their distance.

If keeping a distance is not possible, the RIVM advises to wear mouth masks. “You can go to school, but be careful,” says a spokesperson.

Over 350 monkeypox cases diagnosed in the Netherlands so far; First child tests positive

The monkeypox virus is spreading at an increased speed in the Netherlands. The virus has so far been diagnosed in 352 people, reports the RIVM, the Dutch public health institute.

The figures show that 64 new cases have emerged compared to data released last Thursday. This increase was considerably more significant than the rate of increase in recent weeks.

A child of primary school age is among the people who have contracted the virus. It is not known how that child became infected, but according to the RIVM sexual abuse is not suspected. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, which can also occur outside of sexual activity.

The other infected people are men, and most of them are men who engage in sexual acts with other men. It was previously announced that some of the infected men attended the Darklands Festival in Belgium. This fetish festival was identified as a possible superspreader event. Darklands was held about two months ago, from May 4-9. When someone becomes infected, it can take anywhere from 5 to 21 days for people to develop the first symptoms. That means the people who are now testing positive did not contract the virus during Darklands.

The RIVM warned last Monday that the upcoming Pride events in Amsterdam and other cities could lead to a "more intensive spread" of the monkeypox virus within the Netherlands. The most famous of these in the Netherlands, Pride Amsterdam, is held from July 30 to August 7. Additionally, there are several other events at the end of July, like Roze Woensdag in Nijmegen, Roze Maandag in Tilburg, Pride Amersfoort, and the Milkshake Festival in Amsterdam....

Dutch monkeypox total climbs to 656, including three female patients

The number of people in the Netherlands diagnosed with the monkeypox virus rose to 656. Since the last update on Thursday, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 107 positive tests. The institute confirmed 153 infections since last week Monday, which corresponds with the growth rate in the weeks before.

The number of women who tested positive increased from one to three. Previously, a “child of primary school age” got the virus. Most of the monkeypox cases in the Netherlands concern men who have sex with men (MSM)...

Monkeypox vaccinations started, 32,000 people invited

July 25 2022

In Amsterdam and The Hague a start has been made today with vaccination against monkey pox. The first invitations for the jab were sent last Thursday. About 32,000 people can get a preventive vaccination.

The so-called high-risk groups will be vaccinated. These are people who are registered as users of the HIV prevention pill PrEP. People with HIV are also invited for an injection. Finally, among the 32,000 are people who are known to STI clinics and who have contracted or been warned about a sexually transmitted disease in the past six months.
