Measles outbreak in our region
Recently, GGD Brabant-Zuidoost has received several reports of measles in Eindhoven and the surrounding area. This concerns 14 unvaccinated children with an average age of 5 years and 1 unvaccinated adult. Measles is a very contagious disease. The decreasing vaccination rate increases the risk of spread. Vaccination provides good protection.
Experiencing measles and vaccination provide protection
In the Netherlands, children are vaccinated against measles through the National Vaccination Program. The Measles vaccine (MMR vaccine) consists of 2 injections and also offers protection against Mumps and Rubella. The 1st injection is given at the age of 14 months and the 2nd injection at the age of 9 years. Vaccinated people and people who have previously had the disease are well protected.
There is no reason to bring forward the 2nd injection. Children who are eligible for the National Vaccination Program will automatically receive an invitation.
Risks of measles
Measles is an infectious disease caused by a virus. The disease starts suddenly, with symptoms such as fever, feeling unwell, sneezing and coughing. Infected people usually also have inflamed eyes. After 3 to 7 days, spots appear on the skin. These spots first appear behind the ears and then spread over the entire body. Sometimes people become more seriously ill from measles. Unvaccinated young children, unvaccinated pregnant women and people with an immune disorder are particularly at risk of becoming more seriously ill.
Prevent measles
The GGD Brabant-Zuidoost advises people who are unvaccinated and develop complaints such as fever and rash to stay at home and contact their GP by telephone. We recommend that unvaccinated children be vaccinated via the National Vaccination Program. Currently, children under 14 months cannot be vaccinated. We therefore advise these children to be careful in contact with people with complaints.

Amount of measles cases in Eindhoven rises slightly to 28
