Friesland - Avian influenza in poultry in Abbega

The bird flu has struck a farm in Abbega. The National Food Authority Tuesday began culling at a chicken farm on the Moarrawei.

At the address is the firm Smit Hazenberg located. They have laying hens with more than 63,000 chickens. Laying together every day around 58,000 eggs.

The chickens have been infected with the highly pathogenic strain of the virus, Influenza A virus subtype H5N8. The holding is sealed hermetically. The animals are being culled in the shed. Wednesday they will be removed.

It is the first infection on a farm in Friesland. The past few days more than one thousand dead wild birds have been found, that have succumbed to bird flu.

In Abbega (province of Friesland, the Netherlands) Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) confirmed bird flu H5 at a laying-hen farm on Tuesday December 13, 2016. The birds on this farm will be humanely destroyed as a preventive measure.

Some 63,000 hens will be culled by NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority).

Within the three-kilometer radius of the affected farm in Abbega there are no other poultry farms located.

Mr. Martijn van Dam, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, has announced an immediate transport ban for poultry farms within a ten-kilometer zone of the affected farm in Abbega. This transport ban applies to poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used litter.

The typing of the bird flu virus by WBVR will follow later.
