In Veeningen (Drenthe) bird flu of the H5 type was found in waterfowl in a bird shop. It is most likely a low-pathogenic variant of avian influenza.
To prevent the virus from spreading, the animals are kept in quarantine until there is no more virus excretion. In 2011, the same situation occurred at this location, even then birds were put in quarantine.
This is done on the basis of the European regulations that provide an exception with regard to the removal of animals. In total, about 75 water birds are involved.
