Coronavirus at mink farm in Rijkevoort: 12,500 animals are culled


RIJKEVOORT - The coronavirus was found at a mink farm in Rijkevoort (municipality of Boxmeer). It is the 27th mink farm where the virus has emerged. All minks from the previous 26 have been culled. That fate also affects the 12,500 animals of the company in Rijkevoort.

A mink farm in Elsendorp (municipality of Gemert-Bakel) and a mink farm in Vredepeel (municipality of Venray) have been infected with SARS-CoV-2. These are farms with 12,000 and 6,000 mother animals respectively. The infection came to light by means of the early warning monitoring system that tests cadavers for the virus every week. The companies are cleared as soon as possible.

A total of 29 mink farms in the Netherlands have now been confirmed infected. All animals were culled at 27 farms where SARS-CoV-2 was previously diagnosed.

In Altforst (municipality of West Maas en Waal) where there was previously suspicion of SARS-CoV-2, the infection has now been officially established. It concerns a farm with approximately 12,000 mother animals. The contamination had come to light by means of the early warning monitoring system in which cadavers are tested weekly for the virus. The animals will be culled as soon as possible. No virus has been detected in the samples from the other suspected company reported yesterday.

A total of 31 mink farms in the Netherlands have now been declared infected. All animals of the infected farms are culled.
 
New infections at two mink farms

Infections with covid-19 have been confirmed at two mink farms in De Mortel and Ottersum. Animals of both companies will be culled as soon as possible. A total of 33 mink farms in the Netherlands have now been declared infected.

Previously, scientists, united in the Outbreak Management Team Zo?nosen (OMT-Z), advised the cabinet to preventively culling all mink farms in the Netherlands if new corona infections were to occur after mid-August. This should prevent mink farming from functioning as a 'virus reservoir', say the scientists. The cabinet is now first waiting for a follow-up advice from the OMT-Z.

All mink farmers must stop early 2021

Tomorrow, Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture will announce that mink farming in the Netherlands will be over on 21 March 2021. On that day, the stables with mink cages - on about 120 farms - must be empty. That is three years earlier than intended. The early termination of mink farming is the result of the coronavirus outbreak on many farms.

To date, more than 40 mink farms have been affected by corona. The mink on those farms have all have been culled. For a moment it seemed that the cabinet would decide to preventively cull all mink, but that is not happening now: the danger to public health is too little. The chance that the virus will be passed from mink to humans is small.

In Venhorst it is a company with approximately 5700 mother animals. In Wanroij it concerns two farms with approximately 8400 and 2600 mother animals. The infections came to light from the early warning, the monitoring system where animals are tested for the virus every week. There is also a suspicion of infection at a mink farm, the final result of which is expected tomorrow.

A total of 47 mink farms in the Netherlands have now been confirmed infected.
 
Mink running loose cause unrest in Best: 'such an animal could have corona'

In the past few days, several mink have been spotted in the Heivelden and Naastenbest neighborhoods in Best. Last week, a rabbit was bitten to death and a chicken fell victim to a mink on Thursday. The minks may come from a farm in the municipality.
 
Fiftieth mink farm infected


The corona virus has again been diagnosed at two mink farms. This brings the total number of infected mink farms to fifty, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

These are companies in the North Brabant towns of Deurne and Wilbertoord. Both farms have approximately 3000 parent animals. The animals will be culled as soon as possible to prevent the virus from spreading.
