Next update: Tuesday 7 July

From 1 July on, we will no longer publish a daily update on the increase in the number of people who tested positive, the number of hospital admissions (of patients with COVID-19) and the number of people who died as a result of the novel coronavirus. We are switching to a weekly update containing more information. The weekly update will be posted every Tuesday. The first weekly update will appear on 7 July. The data on the Coronavirus Dashboard provided by the Dutch national government will be updated daily (only in Dutch).

Up to and including 14 July 10:00 a total of 51,146 COVID-19 patients were reported to RIVM in the Netherlands. From all reported patients half are 58 years or older.

So far, 11,892 of reported patients have been admitted in the hospital and 6,135 people died.

Half of the patients admitted are 69 years of age or older; half of the deceased patients were 83 years or older.

Weekly COVID-19 update: 8-14 July 2020

534 new COVID-19 infections were reported over the past week. Hospital admissions for 16 patients due to COVID-19 were reported (current or previous). 8 deaths were reported. Not all of the reported hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last week. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with previous reports that had not yet been included.

In the past week, the number of reports of COVID-19 infections increased with 102 compared to the previous week. At that time, 432 new COVID-19 infections were reported.

Since 1 June, anyone with symptoms can get tested. However, it is possible that not all people with COVID-19 infections will request a test. The actual numbers in the Netherlands are therefore probably higher than the numbers stated here.

Minor local outbreaks

Throughout the country a number of small local outbreaks (clusters) with infections are visible. These small clusters of three or more infections are now more visible because the number of infections is considerably lower than in the months March to May. Usually we find these clusters in the household- and family setting. In addition, local outbreaks are also visible in, for example, businesses, nursing homes, student homes or sports clubs.

With the easing of the restrictions and the holiday season approaching, international travel traffic is also picking up again. As of this week, the travel history will be included in the weekly epidemiological report (in Dutch).

About 100 infections are detected per week through source and contact tracing of the Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs).

Results of the GGD test lanes

Between 1 June and 12 July, 369,287 tests were carried out by the GGDs, of which the results are known. Of these, 1.0% was positive. Between 1 June and 12 July the number of tests decreased from 2% in week number 23 to 0.6% in week number 28. There are regional differences in the total number of tests taken per 100,000 inhabitants and the percentage of positive tests.

It is and remains essential that people adhere to the measures to prevent the spread of the virus as much as possible: social distancing (stay 1.5 metres away from others), handwashing, sneezing and coughing in the elbow and using paper handkerchiefs. In addition, stay at home and get tested at the first sign of symptoms. In this way, we can keep the novel coronavirus under control.

As far as I am concerned, the number of (deceased) Covid-19 patients does not say everything. There can be many reasons for the numbers to increase or decrease. Regardless of what's really going on. The number of hospital admissions may say a little more. But we have also seen that many elderly people (70+) are not admitted. They survive or die at home or in a nursing home. They are not reflected in the Covid-19 statistics.

More relevant, in my view, is the general mortality rate (all-cause mortality): is it higher or lower than average?

It is also becoming increasingly clear that many people - whether or not they have been tested or admitted - can still suffer from shortness of breath, (very) bad condition, reduced smell, concentration disorder, for weeks or months.

Mortality rate in the Netherlands (as of July 1, 2020)
