Patient with new coronavirus in the Netherlands

Publication date 27-02-2020 | 21:19

coronavirus
The new corona virus (COVID-19) was found in a patient in the Netherlands. This has been determined today with lab tests. The patient, who recently visited the Lombardy region, is in isolation. The GGD Municipal Health Service maps contacts of this patient through contact research.

The new coronavirus can spread through drops. For example if someone coughs or sneezes in the face of another. To prevent the disease from spreading further in the Netherlands, the Municipal Health Service (GGD) and the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment map out who has been in close contact with the infected patient. These people (referred to as contacts) are monitored and must record their temperature twice a day and report this to the GGD. They must also report other complaints that they have. These measures reduce the chance that the disease can spread in the Netherlands.

RIVM remains alert to possible new infections and applies the same protocol when new infections are found: isolation, contact investigation and continuous monitoring of the patient.

Symptoms of the disease are fever and respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath or cough. Someone who has spent the last 14 days in an area where COVID-19 is widespread (such as China, South Korea, but also in some municipalities in Italy) with a fever and one of the aforementioned airway complaints can be tested for COVID-19 , the disease caused by the virus called SARS severe acute respiratory syndrome -CoV coronavirus -2. A doctor can also request this test for someone with these symptoms if he or she has been in contact with a patient with the new corona virus.

By Janene Pieters on February 28, 2020 - 14:17

The woman from the Amsterdam region who was diagnosed with coronavirus Covid-19 on Friday is an employee of the Amsterdam UMC, the hospital confirmed on Friday. She did not work with patients. The woman does not have to be hospitalized. Her symptoms are minor enough that she can safely be quarantined at her home in Diemen, Aura Timen, spokesperson for public health institute RIVM, said to NOS.

The woman came back from holiday this week and was working at the hospital for a short time on Thursday, the hospital said. The chance of further infection at the hospital is small, UMC Amsterdam said. Municipal health service GGD Amsterdam is currently identifying exactly who the woman had contact with...

Two contacts tested positive for COVID-19

Publication date 29-02-2020 | 12:47

Last night, direct contacts from the patient in Diemen tested positive for the new corona virus. Because the contact investigation of the GGD Municipal Health Service Amsterdam was started immediately after finding the first patient, these new patients were quickly found. All contacts from these new patients are now also mapped.

The GGD Municipal Health Service Amsterdam approached contacts of the patient staying in Diemen in home isolation yesterday. Because some of these contacts had complaints that could indicate COVID-19, they were placed in isolation and tested for the presence of the virus. In the meantime, they were not allowed to leave the house. The partner and the youngest child of the patient who is in home isolation in Diemen tested positive for the virus. They too now live in home insulation. The results of other contacts tested by this patient were all negative. So the virus has not been detected in them. The partner has also been to Lombardy.

The contacts of the first patient should monitor their health for the next 13 days. If they get complaints that are compatible with COVID-19 (fever and respiratory complaints), they will also be tested.

Two contacts with patients from Tilburg also tested positive for COVID-19

Publication date 29-02-2020

This morning it was announced that the daughter and wife of the patient staying in Tilburg tested positive for the new corona virus. The results of some other contacts were negative.

GGD Hart van Brabant Municipal Health Service approached patient contacts yesterday. Because some of these contacts had symptoms that could indicate COVID-19, they were tested for the presence of SARS severe acute respiratory syndrome -CoV coronavirus -2, the virus that can cause the new coronavirus.

Both new patients have been living in home insulation since the suspicion of COVID-19. The GGD is now also mapping who they have been in contact with.

Three new patients with COVID-19

Publication date 01-03-2020 | 15:31

Today, three new patients have been diagnosed with COVID-19. This means that there are currently 10 patients in the Netherlands. One patient was in the Beatrix hospital in Gorinchem. The hospital is temporarily closed as a precaution.

Patients

Of these three patients, it is not yet known how they became infected. One male patient comes from Drenthe and one female patient from Tilburg. The patients are both in home isolation. We are currently investigating how they became infected. The relevant Municipal Health Service (GGD) also maps out the contacts.

The other female patient was in the Beatrix hospital in Gorinchem without being known to have the cornona virus. The woman has since been transferred to the Erasmus MC Erasmus Medical Center, where she is being treated in isolation.

Beatrix hospital

As a precaution, Beatrix Hospital is taking a number of measures. The contacts of the patient, including the care staff, are mapped and monitored by the GGD. The hospital has also announced a patient stop. This means that no new patients will be admitted to this hospital temporarily. In addition, the hospital is also temporarily closed to visitors.

Travelers from areas with cornona virus

People who have been to one of the areas where the corona virus is present and have complaints are advised to stay at home. If the symptoms get worse, contact the doctor by telephone. It involves people living in China, South Korea, Iran, Singapore and northern Italy. In Northern Italy, the following provinces are: the Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino-South Tyrol, Friuli-Julian-Venice, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria.

Restriction for roommates of patients

People who are housemates of confirmed patients and who have been at risk must limit their social contacts. This means that these people are not allowed to work and to come out as little as possible.
