Hospital admissions for 124 patients were reported today (current or previous). 138 deaths were reported. Not all of the reported hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with data from previous days.

34,842 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment so far.

The figures for the last few days are in line with the impression that the measures are working. The number of new hospital admissions reported per day is still decreasing. The same applies to the number of reported deaths.

Number of positive tests compared to total number of tests

Since 6 April, more people have been tested for COVID-19, especially healthcare workers who are working outside hospitals and have symptoms, as well as vulnerable groups are people who have a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and healthcare workers in hospitals. In recent weeks, the number of people being tested has risen to almost 40,000 per week. The percentage of people who test positive for COVID-19 increased until the end of March, rising to about 30% of the total number of people tested, and then decreased again. In addition to the decreasing number of new patients due to the measures introduced on 16 March, the changed testing policy since 6 April also plays a role here.

COVID-19 in nursing homes

It is estimated that about one-third of nursing homes in the Netherlands have at least one patient with COVID-19. Over the past few days, we have not seen many new nursing homes with COVID-19 patients added to the list. However, we do see the spread of COVID-19 within nursing homes. The number of nursing home residents with COVID-19 who have died has remained at the same level. Read more in this news item COVID-19 in nursing homes.

Mortality is decreasing, also in nursing homes

In the third week of April, mortality due to corona decreased in the Netherlands. Statistics Netherlands and RIVM report this on the basis of the preliminary mortality figures per week.

It is estimated that 4,300 people died last week. That is about 1450 more than average in this period in recent years. In recent weeks, this so-called excess mortality was still around 2,000.

In recent weeks, more elderly people have died in particular. In the age group between 0 and 65, mortality last week was just above the average for the first ten weeks of this year.

Mortality also decreased for the first time in nursing and care homes. However, the number of deaths there last week was still nearly twice as high as in an average week.

Fewer than 700 corona patients in ICUs in the Netherlands, 'things are going in the right direction'

The number of corona patients on Dutch intensive care units has fallen to less than 700. "The total ICU occupancy with 1098 patients in the Netherlands is back to normal capacity," says Ernst Kuipers, chairman of the National ICU Network. "That gives the ICU staff room to catch their breath."

"It varies per hospital how they deal with this occupation, but in general it applies: employees of many ICUs can regain some strength," says a spokesman for the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution.

In total, there are 680 corona patients in the ICU in the Netherlands. There are another 28 Dutch citizens with corona in German ICUs. This brings the total number of Dutch ICU patients with corona to 708. Yesterday there were 735.

"Less than 700 is a great number," said Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care. According to him, regular surgery can be performed in many hospitals next week, although in some hospitals there are relatively many corona patients. "It is expected that it will be around 400 in two weeks. That would be even better."

Further decline of corona patients in ICU

The number of Dutch corona patients in intensive care units is 688. That is 20 fewer than the day before. There are also 382 patients in ICU with other complaints. This is reported by the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution. Chairman Ernst Kuiper: "The differences in occupation between the regions are now acceptable, most regions are now below 100 percent of the normal ICU capacity."

The 700-bed limit has often been cited as an important critical limit below which the number of corona patients must fall and remain. For example, relaxations could only take place if the number of ICU patients with corona falls below that limit, and regular care can then only really be restarted. At its peak, 1,424 corona patients were in the ICU, twice as many as now.

Clear impact achieved by national measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic

To monitor the effect of the measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus, the time when reported COVID-19 patients became ill was examined. This data point was examined in patients who eventually had to be hospitalised. As a result of the time that elapses between infection, the initial symptoms of the illness and the patient’s hospitalisation, it is not possible to see how the measures are affecting hospital admissions until at least a week after the measures are implemented.
