Bird flu has been confirmed at a duck farm in Biddinghuizen. The farm will be cleared, including sister companies in Hierden and Ermelo. Together they have approximately 180,000 meat ducks.

The 10,000 ducks meat from another breeding near the infected farm in Biddinghuizen are culled as a precaution.

In an area of three kilometers around the farm are three other poultry farms. It is not yet clear whether they have bird flu. They are being examined now.

A transportation ban applies to poultry, eggs, manure or litter of all poultry farms within a radius of three kilometers around the infected holding

Since November 9 a national compulsory confinement applies to farms that hold birds for breeding or eggs.

Some 190,000 ducks were destroyed on Saturday at six farms in the Netherlands following an avian flu outbreak, the country's first cull of an epidemic sweeping northern Europe.

Outbreaks of avian flu, primarily the highly pathogenic H5N8 strain, have been reported in Denmark, Finland, Germany and Sweden over the past week.

Dutch authorities did not say what strain of the virus had been discovered at a poultry farm in the village Biddinghuizen, some 70 km (43 miles) east of Amsterdam.

The cull was implemented at four other sites owned by the same company and at a sixth farm less than a kilometer from the site of the confirmed outbreak.

Officials said they were checking for bird flu at farms within three kilometers of the original site and imposed a ban on transporting poultry products within a 10-km (six-mile) radius.

The world's second-largest agricultural exporter, the Netherlands has more than 100 million hens, pigs, cows and sheep on high-intensity farms. The density makes the animals more vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

Bird flu has been confirmed at a second duck farm in Biddinghuizen. This was reported by the Dutch Food Safety Authority.

The bird flu was detected Thursday morning.

The ducks of the affected farm will be culled Thursday afternoon.

Thursday night again a duck farm in Biddinghuizen was hit by bird flu. This is now the third farm where the virus has been identified . It is not yet clear which H5 type and whether it is the highly infectious Influenza A virus subtype H5N8 type.

8500 animals were culled at the farm. This holding was still under strict control and it appeared that the animals were not infected. Later, the farmer has reported to the NVWA because many animals died.

The farms where the virus has been detected in Biddinghuizen are all relatively close to each other. Within a radius of 10 kilometers there is a ban on movements of poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding.
