RHENEN - A holder of a backyard flock in Rhenen recently found several birds which have died from bird flu Influenza A virus subtype H5N8. The discovery was reported Friday by the Dutch Food Safety Authority, which maintains a list of all locations in the Netherlands where bird flu emerges.

A spokesman for the NVWA all animals culled as a precaution: it is about 5 chickens and 15 ducks.

It is the first discovery in the recent wave of bird flu in the region around Ede. The NVWA put the incident under the title "wild birds". Therefore, no measures are taken such as a transport ban.

The municipalities Barneveld and Ede count dozens of farms where chickens are kept in total more than 6 million meat and laying hens. Extra care for hygiene in and around the companies should prevent animals from getting sick.

NVWA examines wild birds found dead since November. A spokesman said this is done to follow as much as possible how the bird flu virus is spreading.
