Children with "sleeping sickness" after flu vaccine

Four Dutch children may have got the serious sleeping sickness narcolepsy because they have been vaccinated against swine flu in 2009. Who suffers from it , has symptoms that include uncontrollable sleep attacks during the day .
According to Lareb, the Dutch Centre For Adverse Effects, seven cases of narcolepsy following vaccination against the flu were reported: six children under 5 years and an adolescent , the jab was in another country . In four cases, there may be a causal relationship , says Lareb .

In 2009 in the Netherlands on a large scale young children vaccinated against the dreaded swine flu . Three years later, a European study showed that there is a link between the Pandemrix vaccine used and the development of chronic sleeping sickness .
The Pharmacovigilance Centre says that further research is needed into that context . The sleeping sickness was confirmed in six young children in the Netherlands , which is remarkable according to Lareb, because narcolepsy usually only occurs in young people from the age of 15 .

Parents of vaccinated children who are not ill , dont'have to worry, according Lareb director Agnes Kant. After five years, children can not get narcolepsy by the vaccine.
