21 TB infections at school
20 June 2007
MEPPEL ? At least 21 students at the Dingstede Christian school system in Meppel are infected with tuberculosis. This emerged from the first results of a large-scale screening action by the regional health authority (GGD) in Groningen.
The screening was started after a first year student at the secondary school was diagnosed with open tuberculosis in early May.
The student infected four other classmates. The disease was prevented in these four children by administering medication.
At the end of May examinations of all first and second year students showed that another six children were infected. This prompted the GGD to start screening all 1,000 students at the school.
Another ten cases of infection have now been found, bringing the total to 21.
