Six million birds culled in Dutch bird flu response in 12 months; Record 300,000 today

In the past 12 months, the Netherlands culled 5.8 million birds in 98 bird flu outbreaks at sites with more than 50 birds. Today, the Ministry of Agriculture reported another outbreak at a company in Heythuysen in the municipality of Leudal. The company has about 300,000 laying hens. According to the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), this is the biggest culling in Dutch history.

This bird flu year started on 26 October 2021 with an H5N1 outbreak in Zeewolde. After 11 more infections in November and December, the NVWA culled 500,000 by the turn of the year.

This year, there have been 87 bird flu outbreaks at companies with over 50 birds, including the biggest one today. The NVWA expects to need days to cull the 300,000 laying hens at the Heythuysen company, though it already included the birds in its figures...

Bird flu diagnosed in Zegveld

News item | 10-11-2022 | 16:49

In Zegveld (municipality of Woerden, province of Utrecht) bird flu was diagnosed on a small-scale hobby farm with ornamental water birds. About 100 ornamental water birds are kept at the location. There are also wild birds. To prevent the spread of the virus, the birds present are culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

There are no poultry farms with animals within the restricted zones (1, 3, and 10 kilometres) around the site. There is a poultry farm in the 3-kilometre zone that has been vacant since 2016. And there is one other poultry farm in the 10 km zone. But this company is also currently empty, because it was cleared on 11 October due to an infection in nearby Bodegraven.

Netherlands to cull another 29,000 chickens to contain bird flu
Reuters | Posted: 5 hours ago | Updated: 5 hours ago | 1 Min Read

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands is to cull another 29,000 chickens on a farm in the north of the country after the detection of a highly infectious strain of bird flu, the government said on Monday.

The farm is in the town of Koudum, 100 kms (62 miles) west of Groningen. A transport ban has been imposed on seven other nearby farms, a government statement said.

It is the third case of the form of avian flu to have been reported in the country in recent days, and the sixth case this month, following dozens of cases earlier in the year...
