Rescuers are searching for nearly 1,400 people, most of them tourists, who are missing after a catastrophic flash flood hit Nepal and Tibet, thundering down valleys, obliterating entire villages and killing at least 356 people.

Efforts to locate those missing – including hundreds of people from India, the US, UK, Australia and Canada – have been complicated by the destruction of dozens of bridges and almost 25 miles (40km) of roads in the mountainous region popular with trekkers and pilgrims.

United States Expresses Condolences to the Victims of the Nepal Floods

The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the devastating flash floods in the Rasuwa district of Nepal. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.

The State Department is closely monitoring the situation and is deploying a disaster response advisor to the region to support response efforts. The Department will also provide $500,000 in assistance through its global award with Catholic Relief Services, supporting emergency shelter, relief items, and water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance to flood-affected communities.

The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu is working closely with local authorities to locate and assist U.S. citizens in the affected areas. U.S. citizens in Nepal who need urgent assistance related to the flooding should contact the U.S. Embassy at KathmanduACS@state.gov. We strongly encourage U.S. citizens in the affected areas to monitor local news, follow instructions from local authorities, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov to receive important safety and emergency information.

Rasuwa Flooding and Major Road Closures

Location: Rasuwa District and communities along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river corridors.

Event: On August 26, a catastrophic flash flood and debris flow struck Rasuwagadhi, Timure, Syafrubesi, and downstream communities. The flood destroyed roads, bridges, buildings, electricity infrastructure, and communications networks. Nepali authorities continue search-and-rescue operations.

The main flood surge has moved downstream. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology currently reports no indication of another major destructive flood. However, continuing rainfall may raise river levels and trigger local flooding, landslides, debris flows, and additional road damage. Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, and damaged infrastructure.

The August 26 flood did not pass through Kathmandu Valley. Tribhuvan International Airport remains open and is handling domestic and international flights. Confirm your flight directly with your airline before traveling to the airport.

Road Closures: As of 10:00 a.m. on August 27, Nepali authorities reported the following major closures:

• Authorities have prohibited traffic between Nagdhunga and Mugling.
• The Mugling–Narayanghat road is closed.
• All highways in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are blocked.
• The Trishuli–Mailung–Syafrubesi road is blocked.
• Multiple sections of the Prithvi Highway in Dhading are blocked.
• The Araniko Highway is blocked near Bhotekoshi and Liping.

These closures block the normal overland routes from Kathmandu toward Rasuwa, Pokhara, Chitwan, Langtang, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border crossing. Authorities have also imposed nighttime restrictions on portions of the BP Highway, Kanti Lokpath, and Tokha–Chhahare road. Do not attempt to bypass roadblocks or use restricted roads as alternate routes.

Actions to Take:

• Postpone non-essential overland travel from Kathmandu toward Rasuwa, Pokhara, Chitwan, or the Tibet border until authorities reopen the roads.
• Do not travel to Rasuwa District, including Langtang, Gosaikunda, the Tamang Heritage Trail, Syafrubesi, Timure, or Rasuwagadhi, until authorities and your travel operator confirm safe access.
• Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, landslides, and flood debris.
• Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater.
• Follow road closures, evacuation orders, and other instructions from Nepali authorities.
• Confirm road, trail, border-crossing, and flight status immediately before traveling.
• If you are safe, contact your family, hotel, guide, and tour or trekking company. Use text, email, or messaging applications if telephone calls do not connect.
• If you are a U.S. citizen currently in, or recently traveling through, Rasuwa or another affected area, email KathmanduACS@state.govwith your full name, current location, status, and tour or trekking company.
• To report an out-of-contact U.S. citizen, provide the person’s full name, last known location, itinerary or tour company, and date and time of last contact.
