ITAHARI, Feb 4: A team of veterinarians from Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) that visited two poultry farms in Sunsari district on Saturday after 6,500 chickens died in the last three weeks said that the disease may not be necessarily bird flu.

"Going by the symptoms of the disease, it may not be bird flu," said senior veterinarian Dr Ganesh Raj Panta, who led the team.
The team visited P K Poultry Firm in Itahari and Pathibhara Poultry Firm in Khanar. Altogether 3,500 chickens at P K Firm and 3,000 chickens at Pathibhara firm have died since January 10...

KATHMANDU:As around 8,000 chickens have died of bird flu , or H5N1 virus in the Nepal's Sunsari district in last few days, more traces of the virus have been found in the region, Xinhua reported.

Though it's been confirmed that the virus led to the chickens' deaths, the samples have been sent to Britain for further investigation.

A team of experts has been mobilised and the district put on high alert, said sources.

KATHMANDU ? Health workers in Nepal are to cull thousands of chickens following the discovery of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in the southeastern part of the Himalayan country, officials said Sunday.
"We sent samples for investigation to London after chickens started to die of a mysterious disease in commercial poultry farms," said Ram Krishna Khatiwada, of the government's Directorate of Animal Health.
"We have received the test reports today that confirms infection of bird flu in poultry farms in Khanar and Ithari of the Sunsari district."
Bird flu has also been confirmed in the eastern hills of Panchathar district and the tea-producing area of Ilam, Katiwada told AFP, adding that surveillance of farms was to be stepped up and 4,000 chickens would be killed in the affected areas.

ITAHARI, Feb 5: The government authorities on Sunday confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Khanar and Itahari of Sunsari, where 6,500 chickens had died at PK Poultry Farm of Bajraha, Itahari-6 and Pathibhara Poultry Farm of Khanar earlier this week.

After chickens started dying, a team led by Ganesh Raj Panta, Senior Vetenary Doctor at Animal Health Directorate, Kathmandu, had monitored the poultry farms.

After confirming bird flu, an official of the district animal heath office, Sunsari, has been called in to contain the possible spread of the virus.

There are five thousand chickens in Pathibhara and 10 thousand in PK Poultry Farm

Authorities have confirmed bird flu in the dead chickens of Khanar and Itahari of Sunsari.

A sample of the dead chicken was sent to England for confirmation test. The test has confirmed that the chickens died of bird flu, Directorate of National Animal Health, Programme Director Dr Ram Krishna Khatiwoda informed.

Over 500 chickens have died in the past two days in Satherjhora-8, around 15 km southwest of the two bird flu outbreak sites in Sunsari in east Nepal, according to a government official.

"Samples of the dead chickens have been sent to the Regional Laboratory, Biratnagar, for tests. We can ascertain the cause of deaths only after the lab sends its report," Chuneshwor Meheta, the Animal Health Technician at the District Veterinary Office, said.

On Sunday, the government has confirmed outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu at the Pathibhara Poultry Farm and the PK Poultry Farm and Suppliers in district.

ITAHARI: The rapid response team deployed by Regional Livestock Service Directorate to Itahari-based PK Poultry returned without accomplishing its mission today.

The team returned after the proprietor of PK Poultry informed that all 3,500 fowls at the farm had died and chickens at the next farm at the same poultry were not affected and did not allow the team to observe the farm.

?We returned without destroying the birds due to the proprietor?s non-cooperation. Apparently, the proprietor feared he would lose his investment,? Dr Acharya said.

ITAHARI: The technical team tasked with inspecting bird flu-infested poultry farms in Sunsari has conceded that it did not bother to inspect part of the PK Poultry in Itahari when its proprietor Nirmal Shrestha insisted that rest of his farm is free of inspection. According to Dr Bolraj Acharya, acting chief of the regional livestock directorate and part of the team, the team found dead chickens during its second visit to the farm. He conceded that samples of the chicken were found to be infected during the tests conducted at the regional laboratory in Biratnagar.

Authorities on Wednesday said bird flu virus was not detected in the dead chickens in Satherjhora-8, around 15 km south-west of the two bird flu outbreak sites in Sunsari. It was reportedly claimed that around 500 chickens had died in the past three days in the Satherjhora area from an unknown disease.

?Samples of dead chickens sent to the Regional Laboratory, Biratnagar, have confirmed that the death of the chickens was due to worms, not bird flu,? Chineshwor Meheta, the Animal Health Technician at the District Veterinary Office, said.

Meanwhile, authorities have banned the sale of poultry for three days in Sunsari district, which come into effect from Thursday. Mahi Narayan Chaudhari, the chief of the District Veterinary Office, said the move was aimed at controlling the infection and spread of the bird flu virus.
