Kala-azar claims five in Saptari

SAPTARI, Jan 28 - With the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division failing to control the epidemic, five people died of Kala-azar in a dalit community in one of the VDCs in Saptari within a week.
Five people including two children in Bathanaha - 7 died this week. Four-year-old Binita Sada, seven-year-old Aasharphi Sada and their mother Bhutani Devi, besides two other locals, died of the disease.
Public Health Office (PHO) said Binita died on Wednesday, while her brother Aasharphi died on Sunday and their mother a day before that. The remaining two died before coming for treatment. According to PHO chief Rakesh Thakur, over five dozen more are suffering from the disease in the village. "The deaths occurred despite effort to control the spread of the disease," Thakur said. People living in over two dozen VDCs in Saptari, including Chhinamasta, Yoganiya and Kusaha are affected by Kala-azar every year. A team from BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences has also reached the village.
The government introduced a new oral medicine called miltefosine last month, citing that it is more effective than sodium antimony gluconate that was being used earlier.
