Bird flu found in two Valley poultry farms

KATHMANDU, JUL 03 - Two days after a farm in Gothatar witnessed a bird flu outbreak, authorities concerned confirmed the contagion in two farms of the Valley on Wednesday.
According to Dr Bolraj Acharya, chief of the District Veterinary Office in Kathmandu, over 10,000 chickens have been slaughtered from the Great Himalayan Hatchery owned by Mahesh Maharjan in Chhauni-13, after tests at the Central Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the H5N1 virus in the farm on Wednesday.
Dr Acharya said they could not cull chickens at the other farm based in Syuchatar on Wednesday due to shortage of labourers. He said they could not find people to do some manual work though a technical team was ready. He said they will start their work on Thursday at the site.
On Monday, 1,015 chickens, 415 eggs and 1250 kg of feed were destroyed after bird flu was confirmed at a poultry farm owned by Amit Kumar Rai at Gothatar-4 in Kathmandu.
The country witnessed its first avian flu outbreak in 2008 in Jhapa. Since then, major outbreaks have been reported in Pokhara, Nawalparasi, Banke and Dhading. The first case of the flu inside the Valley was reported in November 2011 in an area near the Manohara river.

Second bird flu outbreak in capital within a week

KATHMANDU, July 8: With the confirmation of a strain of H5N1 virus at another poultry farm in Kathmandu, a rapid response team deployed by District Veterinary Office (DVO), Kathmandu has culled 4,298 chickens on Sunday night.

The team comprising vet officials and technicians had also destroyed 2,038 eggs and 1,400 kg chicken feed stored in the farm. The vet officials were busy destroying chickens droppings until Monday evening.

Govt sends samples of H5N1 virus to London lab to identify strain

KATHMANDU, July 13 : The Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) under the Ministry of Agriculture Development (MoAD) said that it has sent samples of H5N1 virus to a London-based laboratory to find out whether the virus seen in the Valley is of same strain that was identified in the past.

The move of the DoAH comes following seven bird flu outbreaks in the capital in the last 10 days.

Officials at DoAH said that the bird flu virus has been constantly changing its nature. The DoAH said that the virus has changed its form thrice since the first outbreak in 2009. The office is particularly suspicious about the nature of virus that has been spreading rampantly in the valley?s poultry farms...

Over 6,800 chickens culled in Kathmandu's two poultry farms

KATHMANDU, July 23: Over 6, 800 chickens were culled on Monday following the confirmation of bird flu virus in two separate poultry farms of Kathmandu.

A rapid response team comprising vet officials and technicians culled 5,953 bird flu tainted chickens in a poultry farm owned by Ram Shrestha in Thankot, Kathmandu. The team also destroyed 330 eggs and 1,450 kg chicken feeds stored in the farm.

Likewise, another team of vet technicians culled 756 bird flu infected chickens in a poultry farm of KP Subedi in Kritipur-17, Kathmandu, the Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) said. The team destroyed 1,339 eggs and 400 kg chicken feed found in the farm.

The DoAH said that Monday?s outbreak is 11th in the last three weeks. Out of 10,000 of layer type chickens at Shrestha?s farm, 4000 had already died of the disease. Meanwhile, Subedi told vet officials that he had 2,000 chickens but the rest had already died...

KATHMANDU: The government is planning to put a ban on import of chicken into the Kathmandu Valley to control a possible outbreak of bird flu.

?The ban will come into effect from Tuesday in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur,? Dr Ramkrishna Khatiwada, Deputy Director General at the Department of Livestock Services, said. ?The ban will last for a week.? He added that the department was also mulling over immunisation option, as part of which fowls will be immunised. ?We hope to implement this soon...?

Cops seize 426 ?infected? fowls that were being taken to Birgunj

KATHMANDU, JUL 30 -

Police and veterinary officials of Lalitpur confiscated 426 ? bird flu -infected? chickens from Sundarighat in Balkhu on Monday morning, while a sack full of such chickens was strewn around at Shantinagar gate in Kathmandu. Also on Monday, fresh bird flu outbreak was reported in a farm owned by one Punya Bharati in Kirtipur-17.

At Balkhu, the driver of the vehicle laden with the chickens said the fowls, infected with the H5N1 strain of the flu, were being taken to Birgunj for sale by Balaram KC, the owner of the Bhaktapur-based DJ Poultry Farm. The police and veterinary officials acted on a tip-off from local people of Nangkhel-2, Bhaktapur.

At Shantinagar, foul smell emanating from the dumped chickens gave residents and passers-by a tough time...

As reports of the increasing menace of bird flu continue to make rounds, all efforts at the moment are concentrated on controlling bird flu at poultry farms. Little attention has been paid to other aspects of this potential epidemic. Egg and chicken dishes are still freely available in the restaurants of Kathmandu, and one has to conclude that at least some of them are made from sick or potentially infected birds. To discourage buying and selling of infected birds, the government had banned trading in chickens in Kathmandu, but evidently, traders have found a loophole. Infected birds are being traded in the outskirts of the city where there is no ban. Birds with suspicious symptoms are transported overnight to suburban areas where they can be traded, away from government?s watch. And this is happening despite the Department of Animal Health?s claim that it keeps a close watch on infection in poultry farms...

Lack of extra hands to cull infected chicken s has hit hard blanket slaughtering of fowls in the bird flu emergency areas inside the Capital following a fresh outbreak of the deadly H5N1 in new areas.

A few new places, apart from the bird flu emergency zone inside Kathmandu district, have been seeing new cases of bird flu outbreaks, preventing the authorities from carrying out blanket slaughtering in the emergency areas.

On Thursday, bird flu was confirmed at two poultry farms of Bhadrabas and Sankhu, while an outbreak was reported in some farms at Sundarijal, Nayapati and Gokarna, among others...

H5N1 infection is suspected in the deaths of two women who
suffered from fever and influenza-like-illness (ILI), at the
Teaching Hospital of College of Medical Sciences in Bharatpur.
The hospital has written a letter to the District Public Health
Office (DPHO) after the deaths of the two women on Saturday,
24 August 2013, suspecting that the patients were infected
with the avian influenza virus (H5N1). However, no samples
had been collected from the patients for further laboratory
test.
Another patient suffering from [ILI], cough and fever is
receiving Tamiflu at the ICU of the same hospital. Nasal and
throat swabs collected from her have been sent to the National
Public Health Laboratory in Kathmandu for the confirmation of
suspected virus. The results are likely to come in a week. The
suspected woman patient is a resident of Kawasoti of
neighbouring Nawalparasi district. The avian influenza virus
has spread in different poultry farms in Chitwan and
Nawalparasi.

Bhaktapur bird flu resurgence fears: Govt says no need to press panic button yet

... The Kathmandu district veterinary office said no incidents of birds falling dead have been reported in the district so far.

Meanwhile, the H5N1 strain of the flu was confirmed in chickens on a farm at Kabresthali in Kathmandu on Monday.

?We will complete slaughtering of the birds in the affected farm on Wednesday,? Dr Bol Raj Acharya, chief of Kathmandu veterinary office, said, adding that his office is short of human resources.
