​Kathmandu, Aug. 7 -- At least two people died and 11 others have been infected with the Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus that has spread in nine districts of the country since January.

Of the deceased, one is a 49 years old male from ward 7 of Kanepokhari Rural Municipality in Morang district and another is a 17 years old male from ward 2 of Devtal Rural Municipality in Bara district.

Of the 11 people infected with the deadly disease, four have recovered, and the remaining seven are still receiving treatment.​..

The number of cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infection has reached 33, up from 13 some 10 days ago. Along with the new cases, the number of deaths and districts reporting outbreaks of the deadly virus have also risen—three deaths and 18 districts.

Health ministry’s data show the case fatality rate among infected people is over nine percent, and the rise in the spread of the infection clearly indicates that the country is again witnessing a resurgence of the deadly disease, which has killed and infected thousands of people in the past. A 65-year-old man from Gajara Municipality, Rautahat, has died from Japanese Encephalitis (JE), marking the district's first reported fatality of the season.

The deceased, identified as Shyam Kishor Kami of Gajara-1, passed away late Sunday night while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Provincial Hospital Gaur, hospital officials confirmed.​..

Madhyabindu, Aug 18: A 52-year-old man from Patabari of Madhyabindu municipality-1 has died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE), a mosquito-borne disease.

Chhabilal Subedi, Information Officer at the Province Public Health Office, Nawalparasi confirmed it. The fatality occurred during the first month (mid July-mid-August) of the current fiscal year, which also saw four confirmed JE cases in the district.

Among the infected, the remaining three: a 44-year-old woman, an 83-year-old woman, and a 53-year-old man successfully recovered and returned home.​..

Five die of Japanese encephalitis in Chitwan

CHITWAN, Sept 15: Five people have died of Japanese encephalitis in the district out of 16 reported infections, according to the Chitwan District Public Health Office. The most recent death was recorded on September 8.

Office Chief Dinesh Rupakheti said the latest victim was a 42-year-old woman from Rapti Municipality. Earlier deaths included a 70-year-old man from Bharatpur Metropolitan City (BMC)–22, an 89-year-old man from Kalika Municipality–5, a 70-year-old woman from Rapti Municipality–12, and an 81-year-old woman from BMC–12. All fatalities occurred since mid-July. Last fiscal year, one of three infected patients in the district had died.

Cases of Japanese encephalitis have been detected in BMC, Kalika, Rapti, Khairahani, and Madi municipalities.​..

The death toll from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Chitwan district has climbed to six since mid-July, according to the District Health Office.

Of the deceased, two were from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, two from Rapti Municipality, one from Khairahani, and one from Kalika Municipality. The latest fatality was a woman from Khairahani-4, said vector control officer Ram KC.

So far, 17 infections - 10 women and seven men - have been reported in the district. Three of the patients are under 15 years of age, five are between 15 and 60, and nine are above 60. Fifteen of the infected individuals had not been vaccinated, KC said.​..

KATHMANDU: A total of 31 people have died from Japanese Encephalitis infections across Nepal so far this year, the highest death toll in the past decade, according to Dr. Abhiyan Gautam, chief of the Child Health and Immunization Section under the Department of Health Services.

By comparison, 25 deaths were reported in 2024, seven in 2023, and one in 2017, while no fatalities were recorded between 2018 and 2022.

“This is the highest number of deaths from Japanese Encephalitis in ten years,” said Dr. Gautam. “Most of the victims were over 40 years old and unvaccinated.”

According to the Department, 164 infection cases have been confirmed this year, compared to 86 cases last year. Dr. Gautam noted that in some individuals who had been vaccinated years ago, the vaccine’s effectiveness may have waned, leading to severe infection and death.

Japanese Encephalitis has now spread to 110 municipalities across 42 districts, with 28 districts classified as high-risk. The disease is most prevalent during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, from July to November.

Provincial data show that Koshi Province reported four deaths, Madhes three, Bagmati five, Gandaki five, Lumbini eleven, Karnali one, and Sudurpaschim two.​..

KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Six people have died from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Chitwan among patients receiving treatment at various hospitals. Since July, 17 patients infected with the disease have been admitted, of whom six have succumbed.

According to Nirmal Ghimire, Chief of the Public Health Office, the deceased include two from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, one from Khairahani Municipality, two from Rapti Municipality, and one from Kalika Municipality. Their ages range from 39 to 89 years: one was 89, one 81, two 70, one 42, and one 39 years old.​..

KATHMANDU: Altogether 35 people succumbed to Japanese encephalitis infection in Nepal in 2025.

According to Dr Abhiyan Gautam, Chief of Child Health and Immunization Service Section in the Ministry of Health of Population, a total of 179 cases of Japanese encephalitis were reported this year out of 1,739 suspected patients.
Last year, 24 people lost their lives to this mosquito-borne infection, informed Dr Gautam.

Expressing concern over the increasing death toll from Japanese encephalitis annually in the country, Gautam shared that 7 people died due to this infection in 2023, one in 2017 and four in 2014.

He informed that people aged between 3 years to 89 years had been diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis this year....

Five of the nine people confirmed to have Japanese encephalitis (JE) in Jhapa over the past four months have died, raising concern as health officials urge residents to take precautions against the mosquito-borne disease.

Sayal Rai was 12 years old when he contracted Japanese encephalitis (JE). He is now 14. Taken to hospital for treatment on 2081 Saun 29, he is still in the hospital and breathing with the help of a ventilator.

“It has been more than two years since he was infected, but my son is still on a ventilator,” Sayal’s mother, Nirmala, said over the phone from Dharan. “He cannot breathe on his own or speak, and he has also developed bedsores on his back after lying in the same position for more than two years.”

Nepal is currently witnessing a major outbreak of JE. At least 21 people have died of the disease in the past one and a half months, while 59 others have been infected.​..
