Cholera case detected in capital

KATHMANDU, April 30: A patient has tested positive for cholera at the research unit of Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Control Hospital, Teku before onset of monsoon. The patient had first visited the hospital for treatment of diarrhea.

Chamali Kapali, 56, who is originally from Kavre, has been staying in Kalanki for the past three years.

?We first took stool sample and sent her home prescribing some medicine,? Dr Rajesh Shah, a member of the research unit at the hospital said, adding, ?We detected 0.1 Ogawa species in her stool sample.? Kapali was admitted to the hospital on Friday.

Dr Shah said Kapali?s health is improving gradually. Cholera is not uncommon in Nepal but doctors say identification of the disease before monsoon is serious.

?Outbreak of cholera is not so uncommon during monsoon. But detection of cholera before the onset of monsoon is alarming,? he said. According to Shah contaminated water is the main cause of cholera infection. Cholera claims hundred of lives across the country every year.

?Contaminated water is the main cause of several diseases. Before drinking, make sure the water is pure,? he said. He has also asked people to wash hands before eating.

MARTADI: A diarrhoea patient ? Juna BK (22) of Dahakot-3 in Bajura ? died at the health post in Dahakot yesterday. Health workers at the post said the woman suffering from the disease for two days lost her life as her family did not rush her to the health facility on time.

While the number of diarrhoea, cholera and common cold patients has surged in the past three weeks, lack of medicines at health facilities has only added to the locals? health woes. Bajura district hospital records show diarrhoea cases comprise 50 percent of recent cases.

12 cholera cases in capital spark concern

KATHMANDU, June 30: At least a dozen patients admitted in different hospitals of the capital have tested positive for cholera. Since all the patients are residents of Kathmandu, the doctors say the disease might have already spread making drinking water in several parts of the capital unsafe.

The Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Control Hospital, Teku detected 11 cases of cholera in the past two weeks.

According to the hospital?s research unit, cholera was confirmed in patients admitted in the hospital for the treatment of diarrhea. The patients are from Kritipur, Sitapaila, Kalanki, Kalopul and other locations of the capital...

From Baisakh (April/May) till the end of Jestha (May/June), 11 cholera cases have already been identified, informed Dr Sher Bahardur Pun of the hospital. But due to lack of technology, the hospital has not been able to track down the strains for these cholera cases.

On Wednesday, June 30, Republica reported that at least a dozen patients admitted in different hospitals of the capital have tested positive for cholera and that all the all the patients are residents of Kathmandu.

The doctors also warned that the disease might have already spread making drinking water in several parts of the capital unsafe.

In this context, it is important to note that on June 27, among the 15 patients who reported at Sukraraj Hospital with waterborne diseases, one of them was Gyan Bahadur Lama, 66, who traveled from Kavre to Kathmandu to get emergency admittance at 8 pm.
