Dengue fever enters Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Two cases of dengue fever have been found in Kathmandu for the first time. Dengue is caused by dengue virus (DenV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus. It is transmitted by Aedes mosquitos.

"This is the first discovery of dengue fever in the Kathmandu Valley even though the disease was detected in the Tarai and inner-Tarai districts some five years ago," according Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, Teku.

"Aedes mosquitos are found in cold water, freeze, cooler houses and other cold places and rich people are vulnerable to dengue fever," said Dr Bashu Dev Pandey at Teku Hospital on Monday.

He said the disease is communicable from one person to another and its symptoms are high fever, bleeding and unconsciousness. "If an infected person is not treated on time, the patient may die," he said...

KATHMANDU, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Medics have suspected that dengue fever might spread in Nepali capital Kathmandu, which was safe earlier, with the increasing mosquito menace in the city.

According to Wednesday's The Rising Nepal daily, Terai districts in southern Nepal have already been at a high risk of dengue.

The dengue virus has been traced in Kathmandu and no one can say that Kathmandu will always be free from dengue fever, said virologist Dr. Basudev Pandey.

Epidemics of typhoid, viral influenza and fever have been spreading in Damauli Bazaar of Tanahu district for the past two months.

A person who arrived in Kathmandu from the area affected by dengue fever was also diagnosed with dengue haemorrhagic fever during a test in Kathmandu.

"It is not sure, however, that dengue has spread," Dr. Pandey said. "We are sending a team of microbiologists to Tanahu on Wednesday."

Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes. Unlike other mosquitoes bred in dirty water, dengue transmitted mosquito (called Aedes Aegypti and Aedes albopictus) increased in clean and stagnant water, said Dr. GD Thakur, director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Division. "The virus can pass through clean water which we use in home like, tank water or potable water," he said.

Post monsoon period is highly risky for dengue disease.

The first case of dengue in Nepal was reported in Chitawan in 2004.

In 2006, an outbreak of confirmed dengue fever was observed in nine districts in the Terai region.

Chitwan confirms 53 cases of dengue

CHITWAN, Sept 20: Chitwan district, which is reeling under viral fever, confirmed 53 cases of dengue, 10 leptospyrosis and 12 Pandemic H1N1 Influenza, otherwise known as swine flu.

The District Public Health Office (DPHO) said 17 patients of Bharatpur Hoapital, 26 of Chitwan Medical College and three samples sent to Kathmandu have tested positive for the disease, while tests conducted in Bharatpur Medical College have yet to be obtained.


Hospitals in Chitwan have started testing for dengue from September 15 after the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division sent them the test kit. The difficulty in testing the disease lurked as the government delayed the shipment of the test kits, thereby delaying the treatment.

It was only after the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division that sent 75 kits to Bharatpur Hospital, 25 to Medical College Bharatpur and 96 to Chitwan Medical College when the test began.

Currently, dengue fever is being diagnosed at these hospitals free of cost, vector control inspector at the DPHO, Ram KC, said.

KC, however, conceded that the number of test kits was not sufficient enough forcing the patients to go for the test in hospitals elsewhere which have not been supplied with the kit by the government, by paying up to Rs 1,000 for a single test.

The DPHO has launched an awareness campaign against dengue, leptospyrosis and swine flu as the prevalence of fever went out of control across the district.

The campaign is especially focused on combating dengue, which is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The people in the affected areas have been advised to be careful as the mosquitoes breed in water collected in artificial containers such as plastic cups, used tires, broken bottles, flower pots, and even drinking water tanks.

Nine persons have died of dengue and viral fever in Chitwan Medical College, six in Bharatpur Medical College and four in Bharatpur Hospital since last week of August.

CHITWAN: At least 19 persons have died in a month and more than 7,000 have been afflicted with dengue and viral fever in Chitwan.

According to Mahendra Prasad Shrestha, District Public Health Officer, nine persons have died of dengue and viral fever in Chitwan Medical College, six in Bharatpur Medical College and four in Bharatpur Hospital since the spread of the diseases in the district in the last week of August. He estimated that more than 7,000 others had been suffering from the diseases. According to Dr Shital Adhikari, head of Medical Department of CMC, 40 patients of dengue fever were visiting the hospital daily and at least 12 of them had test positive for dengue...

CHITWAN: The number of people infected by Dengue has been on the rise in Chitwan, with the latest number reaching 71.

Altogether 265 people have so far carried out tests for suspicion of carrying the Dengue virus and of them 71 were found infected by Dengue, the District Public Health Office has said.

The number of people suffering from fever since the recent outbreak of viral fever and Dengue has been increasing every day, and more than 500 people with symptoms of fever visit different hospitals in Chitwan...

Chitwan doctor contracts dengue

CHITWAN: A senior doctor working in the Bharatpur Hospital in the district has contracted dengue fever. The doctor, whose identity has been kept secrect, has been ferried to the Capital where he is undergoing treatment.

Efforts are being made to take the doctor abroad for further treatment.

Chitwan District Public Health Officer Mahendra Prasad Shrestha said the health workers and the commoners have been worried after the doctor was infected with the dengue virus.

He said the office has urged the Ministry of Health to send a team of specialist doctors and health workers at the earliest.

KATHMANDU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The dengue virus was found in a senior doctor of Chitwan district in central Nepal. He was brought to the capital Kathmandu for treatment.

According to Saturday's The Rising Nepal daily, although the government claimed supervision was continuing in the area, the disease has not come under control.

Instead, the number of patients infected with dengue fever was rising in the district.

Dengue fever, leptospirosis and influenza A/H1N1 have been creating a havoc in Chitwan recently.

But only on Friday, the Department of Health Services sent a team with special program to the district.

The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division has planned to establish special fever clinics in the District Hospital of Chitwan to treat the fever patients separately.

During two months several kinds of fever like dengue, leptospirosis and influenza A/H1N1 claimed 19 lives in Chitwan.

NAWALPARASI: Three patients of dengue have been detected in Nawalparasi.

District Health Office has conducted camp in Mukundapur after dengue spotted in the district.



Blood samples had been sent to Bharatpur for lab test after three people were detected with dengue.



According to Acting Chief of District Health Office Narayan Panthi, camp has been conducted for 12 hours a day in Bhedabari of Mukundapur to prevent the outbreak of epidemic.



A dengue suspect has been detected in the camp and his blood sample was sent to Bharatpur for test, informed District Health Office.

KATHMANDU; The Legislature-Parliament Committee on Women, Children and Social Welfare is all set to direct the Ministry of Health and Population to form a ‘special committee’ in coordination with Constituent Assembly (CA) members to monitor the present situation of dengue and other epidemics.

For the first time, EDCD applied the method of ‘fogging’ to control the outbreak of dengue in Chitwan. EDCD has examined a total of 901 cases and found that 139 are dengue cases.

At least 14 persons are reported to have died in more than a month following the outbreak. Dengue has been mostly spotted in Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Surkhet districts.

NARAYANGADH: Health authorities here said they have confirmed dengue in 194 out of 766 patients, who underwent health check-up in Chitwan and adjoining districts till date starting August 17.

More worrisome is a steady rise in the number of dengue patients. Each passing week, according to the District Public Health Office, sees confirmation of 75 new dengue cases.

Fifty-two patients have been diagnosed with dengue virus since September 2.
BIRGUNJ/CHITWAN: Dengue has now assumed epidemic proportions in Birgunj after inflicting the neighbouring district of Chitwan.

Patients are thronging Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital, National Medical College, and AMC Hospital.

District Public Health Office (DPHO), Birgunj, has however, not informed about the disease even though it has taken epidemic form since two weeks.

Fifty-two patients have been diagnosed with dengue virus since September 2. Twenty-five of them have been admitted in Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital and 27 in AMC Hospital.

Meanwhile the number of Dengue patients has gone down in Chitwan district.

According to Mahendra Prasad Shrestha, senior public health administrator, 205 patients were diagnosed with dengue from 1,100 blood samples. ?There might be more dengue patients among those who haven?t tested,? he said.

RAUTAHAT: Dengue has made inroads into this Tarai district, with the Gaur hospital confirming its virus in Sheikh Bigan (24) of Mathiya VDC-4. A factory worker in New Delhi, Bigan had returned home four days ago after falling ill. Doctors at the hospital are attending to him. According to Dr Ram Shanker Thakur, the hospital chief, they were preparing to send the patient to the Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital for further treatment.

KATHMANDU: Hari Lal BK ( 28), from Butwal died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital in Teku on Friday.

Virologist Dr Basu Dev Pandey said he was referred from Butwal Hospital to Bharatpur Hospital and then to Teku Hospital. BK first visited Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) but was refused admission. He then came to Teku Hospital.

The patient died of dengue shock syndrome, also known as dengue haemorrhagic fever.

During Dashain alone, around 200 dengue cases were referred to Sukraraj Hospital.

CHITWAN: One more died of dengue in Chitwan district, according to the District Public Health Office.

The health office has not made public the name of the 33-year-old victim as of Wednesday noon. Vector Control Inspector Ram KC the victim admitted at Bharatpur Medical College on Oct. 27 died on Oct. 29. "The public health office only knew about the death today," KC said.

With this, the number of death toll from the life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes has reached two in Chitwan. Earlier, two succumbed to the disease in Rupandehi and one in Nawalparasi.

Girl dies of dengue

DHANGADI, Nov 2: A girl died of dengue fever in Kailali. Srijana Bhandari, 10, of Geta-10 Attariya, died of the fever while undergoing treatment at the Seti Zonal Hospital.

Her blood tests have not confirmed dengue but the District Public Health Office (DPHO) has registered it as a dengue death saying dengue symptoms were seen in her.

A total of 20 persons have contracted the disease in the district till now with eight of them from Dhangadhi Municipality alone.

BHAIRAHAWA: A person died of dengue fever at the Bhim Hospital in Bhairahawa of Rupandehi district on Thursday.

Forty-five year old Ram Singh Thakur of Bahadurgunj, Kapilvastu who was infected by dengue virus died during the course of treatment, according to Manohar Joshi, medical superintendent of the hospital.

Thakur was admitted to the hospital on Monday after being infected with the disease.

A total of 127 cases of dengue virus has been detected in the district, according to an official of the Public Health Office, Bhairahawa.

Bhuwan Prasad Luitel, senior officer of the municipality, informed that they had to seek security personnel?s help after the clean-up campaign launched in the area 15 days ago failed to yield tangible results.

The Rupandehi District Public Health Office (DPHO) says the district has 234 dengue cases as of November 10. Of them, 177 are from Butwal municipal area alone. So far, four people have succumbed to dengue in the district ever since the disease made inroads in September.

Meanwhile, the Nawalparasi DPHO is all set to launch a door-to-door campaign against the disease in the district. DPHO chief Dr RH Dip said his office was preparing to launch the campaign in district headquarters Parasi, Sunwal, Bardaghat, Arunkhola, Chormara, Danda, Kawasoti, Pragatinagar, Daldale, Rajahar and Gaindakot. As of now, the district has recorded 40 dengue patients

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has made it clear that the number of dengue victims was yet to be ascertained.



Five persons died of dengue in the government hospitals but the number of the victims in the private hospitals was yet to be figured authentically, according to the Division of Epidemiology and Disease Control.



Division Director Dr G D Thakur informed the meeting of a task force on implementing the direction of the dengue control committee of the Legislature-parliament, committee on women, children and social welfare today. However, he said private hospitals have been written for sending facts about the deaths.
