Abstract
To the Editor: Madhi et al. (Sept. 4 issue)1 describe the protection of pregnant women and infants conferred by the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV3). One of the primary outcomes of the study was the efficacy of IIV3 administered during pregnancy to protect infants against confirmed influenza. The vaccine efficacy was reported to be 48.8% among infants whose mothers did not have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This means that although their mothers were immunized, 51.2% of the infants were not protected. The question arises as to whether the infants who did not gain effective immunity were also those who . . .
