Restricting access to poisonous pesticides can go a long way in reducing Trinidad and Tobago?s rising rate of suicides, according to psychiatrist Gerard Hutchinson.
Hutchinson, who was speaking at a media sensitisation workshop held at the Trinidad Hilton and Conference Centre, Port of Spain yesterday, noted that this country has the third highest suicide rate in the Caribbean, at 21 per 100,000.
The only two Caribbean countries with a higher suicide rate are Guyana and Suriname.
And for every suicide, Hutchinson said, there are 20 more attempted suicides.
Hutchinson said the most common factors leading to suicide were family or relationship issues and economic hardship, while the most common method was ingesting poisonous substances...
