DOUGLAS COUNTY, Neb. —Local hospitals are now being urged by the CDC to be on the lookout for avian influenza among patients.

When children are hospitalized with influenza at Children's Nebraska, they are now tested for avian flu.

"We have not found any cases in the children who've needed to be hospitalized that have avian influenza, fortunately. But we are on the lookout for that," said Alice Sato, MD PhD, the hospital epidemiologist for Children's Nebraska.

Flu claims first life in Two Rivers district; COVID deaths reach 6 this season

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - A south-central Nebraska resident has died from complications from the flu, making it the first flu death this respiratory season for the Two Rivers health district.

On Friday, the Two Rivers Public Health Department (TRPHD) also reported its sixth death COVID-19-related death.

Members of the health department extended their deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones.

TRPHD continues to closely monitor all respiratory infections within the district, including influenza and RSV.

Both individuals lived in the seven-county district. The district includes Buffalo, Dawson, Franklin, Gosper, Harlan, Kearney and Phelps counties.

TRPHD reported its first COVID-19-related death in November for this year’s respiratory season.
