Pediatric deaths associated with influenza are required to be reported. Influenza-associated deaths
in adults are not reportable. Voluntary reporting to public health of deaths in adults is encouraged
to help determine the severity of the current circulating virus.
 At least 1 influenza-associated death has been reported for the season.

Douglas County reports first flu death of the season

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Neb. (WOWT) -- Health officials say Douglas County has recorded its first official flu death of the season.


Nebraska is experiencing a high activity level in flu-like illness so far this season.
The Douglas County Health Department says a woman over the age of 65 died earlier in December.

HIAWATHA, Kan. (WIBW) A nine-year-old Hiawatha girl has died after getting sick with the flu the weekend before Christmas.

Relatives Cheryl DeLong and Odessa Kirkendoll said the girl, Leighya DeLong, was diagnosed with influenza while visiting family in Nebraska.

They said she was released from a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska before her condition worsened on Sunday, December 22.

Leighya died shortly after being rushed back to the emergency room...
 
Douglas County officials confirm second flu death of the season

On Monday Douglas County officials confirmed the second flu-related death of the season.

A week ago officials said a woman, described as being over the age of 65, was the first person to die from the flu in the county.

"Influenza came early and in record numbers," said Dr. Anne O'Keefe, with the Douglas County Health Department. "We've been getting positive flu cases reported to us, already we're over 2,000 cases so far this season."

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Lincoln Lancaster Health Department reported on Friday that Lancaster County has had three flu-related deaths. All three were adults in their 60's. This brings the state's flu deaths to at least seven.

Douglas County announced on Friday that it has had two pediatric flu deaths, meaning that the children were 18 or under. That brings the total in the county to four.

Douglas County health officials confirm 2 children died from flu this season

OMAHA, Neb. —
The Douglas County Health Department confirmed Friday that two influenza-associated pediatric deaths have taken place during the current flu season.

Pediatric deaths are defined as those in which the deceased is less than 18 years old.

The most recent CDC report on the flu season reported 32 pediatric deaths in the United States this flu season. That does not include the Douglas County deaths.

Douglas County has also confirmed two adult influenza-related deaths and both of those involved people at least 50 years old.

8 Douglas County residents have died of the flu so far this season, officials say

Four more adults have died from flu-related illnesses in Douglas County, officials said.

The update, from the week that ended Saturday, brings the total number of influenza deaths among Douglas County adults to six. All were 65 or older.

Last week, county health officials announced two children had died because of the flu. The county did not release their ages.
