Neb. H1N1 death tally at 14
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Another Nebraskan sickened by H1N1 flu has died.

The Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that a woman in her 60s from Washington County in eastern Nebraska died after becoming ill with the virus. Thirteen other deaths have previously been reported.

Health officials say the woman had underlying health problems including asthma and diabetes

So when you start at the bottom with flu cases, all there is left is to go up (or move to Guam which is also reporting NO activity). Now the Distribute system is reporting a 10% increase in ILI for NE.

Viral Surveillance: 8 of 329 rapid influenza tests (2.43%) tested positive (7 A and 1B) at 58 Nebraska collaborating laboratories for influenza.
Outpatient Illness Surveillance: The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) has decreased from 1.94% to 0.14% with 5 of 18 (28%) providers reporting.
Hospital Influenza-like Illness (ILI) Admissions Surveillance: 96 new influenza associated hospitalizations this week, bringing the season total to 3855. 35% of these hospitalizations are in children 0-4 years old. For adults 65 and older group the percent hospitalized is 34% and for those 50-64 years old, 15%.
Mortality: Eleven (11) deaths in Nebraska have been attributed to lab confirmed influenza virus since August 30, 2009. The last death was reported 12/22/09."

There were 89 new influenza-associated hospitalizations this week, bringing the season total to 4706. 37% of these hospitalizations were in children 0-4 years old. For adults 65 and older, the percent hospitalized was 36% and for those in the 5-18 age group, 10%.

There were no illness related school closures reported for the surveillance week. Absenteeism due to ILI is less than 1%.

There were 80 new influenza-associated hospitalizations this week, bringing the season total to 4788. 44% of these hospitalizations were in adults 65 and older. For children 0-4 years old, the percent hospitalized was 26% and for those in the 50-64 age group, 15%.

State health departments report the estimated level of spread of influenza activity in their states each week through the State and Territorial Epidemiologists Reports. States report influenza activity as no activity, sporadic, local, regional, or widespread. These levels are defined as follows:

*No Activity: No laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza and no reported increase in the number of cases of ILI.
*Sporadic: Small numbers of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases or a single laboratory confirmed influenza outbreak has been reported, but there is no increase in cases of ILI.
*Local: Outbreaks of influenza or increases in ILI cases and recent laboratory-confirmed influenza in a single region of the state.
*Regional: Outbreaks of influenza or increases in ILI and recent laboratory confirmed influenza in at least 2 but less than half the regions of the state.
*Widespread: Outbreaks of influenza or increases in ILI cases and recent laboratoryconfirmed influenza in at least half the regions of the state.
