Raleigh, NC -- A measles outbreak was reported Thursday by the NC Department of Health and Human Services in Stokes and Orange Counties.

So far, seven cases have been documented between the two counties. The state department said in a public health advisory that it is investigating the outbreak with local health departments...

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday that seven cases of measles have been reported in Stokes and Orange counties.

The department did not say how many there were in each county and where the outbreak occurred...

...To date, 8 cases have been confirmed in North Carolina, 7 in Stokes County and 1 in Orange County. There are known exposures in many other counties including several in western North Carolina..

Measles outbreak contained in Stokes County
No new cases reported since last week

Last week health officials announced that several measles cases had been reported in Stokes County, but Stokes Health Department Director Scott Lenhart said Tuesday that the outbreak seemed to be under control.

As of Tuesday morning, no new cases had been reported since last week. There were eight confirmed cases in the state ? seven in Stokes County and one in Orange County.

The individuals with confirmed cases of the measles in Stokes were getting better, Lenhart said...

The children are students at Emerson Waldorf School north of Chapel Hill and Grady Brown Elementary School in Hillsborough, but were not exposed to the measles at school, officials said...

...The Orange County Health Department is offering the MMR vaccine to any residents who have not received the vaccine in the past. To schedule an appointment, residents can call the Health Department at (919) 245-2400 or call their family physician...

...Officials believe the local cases could have stemmed from a person who had just returned from India.

As of Thursday, there were 14 measles cases statewide.

Additional cases of the measles have been identified in Stokes County, according to the Stokes County Health Department.

The health department reported Monday evening that local and state public health officials are focusing efforts in Stokes County to contain a statewide outbreak. As of Monday, 19 cases had been identified in Stokes, Orange and Polk counties.

One case was identified in a student who attended North Stokes High School...

Measles outbreak spreads into Forsyth, Guilford counties

...The number of cases has risen from eight to 19 since the first report April 18. At that time, there were seven cases in Stokes and one in Orange.

The agency did not say how many cases are in Chatham, Forsyth, Guilford and Polk counties.

Most of the cases are associated with people who live in or have visited the Prabhupada Village, which is at 1283 Prabhupada Road in Sandy Ridge. The village is affiliated with the Hare Krishna movement.

The agency said local public health departments have notified more than 1,000 people in the six counties that they may have been exposed to the disease...

One Trip To India Caused a Statewide Measles Outbreak

Scott Lenhart, Stokes County Health Director, told WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford the source is a man in his late twenties or early thirties from the Prabhupada Village in Stokes County. He took a trip to India at the end of March, where he contracted measles and brought it back to the United States...

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the outbreak had spread to Guilford and Forsyth counties. People in these counties have been exposed to the disease...

...the Guilford County Department of Public Health last week warned about 200 people that they might have been exposed to the highly contagious disease.

More than 800 others in Stokes, Forsyth, Orange, Polk and Chatham counties also have been warned of possible exposure...

...At least two people with confirmed cases attended the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival in Chatham County on April 19-21.

Dr. Ward Robinson, medical director for the Guilford County health department, said most of the exposures happened when infected persons visited hospitals and clinics in Guilford and Forsyth counties...

Last week county health officials thought the measles outbreak that had surfaced in mid-April would soon be a thing of the past, but four new cases were reported over the weekend. One was at North Stokes High School.

Stokes County Health Director Scott Lenhart said 19 cases had been reported in Stokes, Orange and Polk counties as of Tuesday morning, and 12 of those cases were in Stokes.

The four new measles cases were reported Friday, just a few days from the end of the 21-day incubation period being tracked by the health department. Now the clock has reset, and the county is taking additional steps to stop the spread of the highly contagious illness...

Orange County, N.C. ? People who attended a youth baseball game last weekend in Hillsborough might have been exposed to measles, the Orange County Health Department said Thursday.

A person who attended two games of the Hillsborough Youth Athletic Association (HYAA) ? on Friday, May 3, at 6 p.m. at the Cedar Grove Park in Cedar Grove and on Saturday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m. at Exchange Club Park in Hillsborough ? developed symptoms of measles on Sunday.

Those who attended the games, even if they have current vaccinations, should be on alert for symptoms of measles...
