Richard Charles Mort
Richard Charles Mort, 76, of Butler was blessed to enter his eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ by passing peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 1, 2009. He had contracted the flu while living in an assisted living home in Butler and just couldn't get past it. He was born June 23, 1933, a son of William J. Mort and Izetta Mae Foster Mort. Both preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, his only brother, William D. Mort, passed on Aug. 1, 2006.Mr. Mort was married to Sally Lou Hogue Mort. She passed away Feb. 26, 1982, after just 25 years of marriage.He leaves behind one son, Richard C. Mort Jr. of New Castle, and one granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Mort. In addition to his son and granddaughter, he is survived by his Uncle Bill and Aunt Harriett Marshall of Ellwood City, Aunt Muriel Magee of Pittsburgh, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.As a young man, Dick was employed as a guard at the Lawrence County Jail, and as a deputy for Lawrence County under Sheriff Frank Coen.A veteran of the Korean War, he lived his life with images that a war brings.After returning from honorable service as a corporal in the Army, he was employed by Mesta Machine Co. until it closed the New Castle facility in the late 1970s.During his retirement years, he worked for the Blind Association in New Castle, and for the driver photo exam center.Dick was a man that truly loved life. He was a member and officer of Greater Beneficial Union 56, and enjoyed his free time with friends at the Gripers Club.He always enjoyed the time he spent at Leo's Lair, a camp in Benezette, Pa. He also loved spending time with this son's family in Boca Raton, Fla.He adored his granddaughter, and always enjoyed her time with him. One of his last visits with her was to sit by the lake at Moraine State Park, which she will cherish forever.At his request, there will be no calling hours.A private service will be conducted at Castle View Memorial Gardens, where he will be next to his loving wife, Sally.He will be sadly missed and always remembered.
