LINCOLNTON - For the protection of patients and visiting children, effective Thursday, October 1, Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln is temporarily restricting all visitors under the age of 18 from visiting patients.
This step is being taken as a proactive response to the swine flu, or H1N1 virus spread.
?We are seeing flu in the hospital, but nothing overwhelming at this time. We believe that this visitor restriction, while difficult, will help slow the spread of the illness and protect vulnerable individuals,? states Pete Acker, hospital CEO.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, doctor?s office visits related to the flu and hospitalizations related to flu are increasing nationally. Statewide, North Carolina is one of twenty-six states that the CDC cites as reporting wide-spread flu activity.
Because the CDC recommends that physician offices and hospitals not test specifically for swine flu in most cases, specific statistics on the number of swine flu cases at CMC-Lincoln are not available.
However, CMC-Lincoln has seen an increasing number of patients with flu-like symptoms.
