CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - H1N1 is the same virus responsible for the 2009 epidemic that killed tens of thousands of people across the world.
According to the North Carolina DHHS, from Oct. 5, 2013 to Feb. 8, 2014, there have been 165 confirmed cases of H1N1 in the state.
The latest to contract the airborne virus is an 8-month-old child from Cary named Deklan Galvanek. He has been fighting for his life ever since he contracted the H1N1 virus last Monday, but is now in more stable condition.
Evan and Jenna Galvanek are his parents and say their 8-month-old boy was the picture of health until last Monday. At first they thought he had symptoms of the common cold but within 24 hours it was clear it was something more serious.
"Suddenly we started noticing a change in his color. His face was a little bit white, his lips were blue, and most noticeable was his rapid breathing" said father Evan Galvanek.
Little over a week later test results showed that Deklan tested positive for H1N1.
