National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

sharon sanders

Editor-in-Chief & President
NSC, Cantel Medical to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

March 31, 2008

Cantel Medical Corp. (Little Falls, N.J.) and the National Safety Council (Itasca, Ill.) announced a joint marketing and distribution agreement to help businesses and other organizations prepare for the threat of a flu pandemic and similar infectious diseases. Under the agreement, Cantel, a provider of infection prevention and control products to the medical and dental markets through its Saf-T-Pak and Crosstex business units, will manufacture NSC/Saf-T-Pak co-branded Flu Defense Kits and other product configurations that will include Crosstex face masks, hand sanitizers, gloves, and surface disinfecting products.
Cantel and NSC will co-market these products, along with providing planning and educational services, to more than 50,000 NSC members that represent a broad spectrum of industries and more than 8.5 million employees. According to Donna Siegfried, NSC's executive director of emergency care programs, "The National Safety Council sought to complement its 'Prescription for the Flu' educational program with infection prevention and control products that are proven to be effective. We selected Cantel Medical because of its product quality and ability to provide a full range of planning services, customized kitting and global distribution capabilities. Together, we can help employers keep their workers and their workers' families as safe and productive as possible."
The World Health Organization continues to track the incidence of avian bird flu throughout the world and warns of the potential of mutation of the H5N1 virus that could result in a widespread human-to-human pandemic.

Re: National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

i've been noticing a LOT of companies and law enforcement agencies doing this same thing - 'preparing' 'giving information' 'conferences' etc..etc..etc...does this kind of thing happen every 'flu season'?

Re: National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

No, but there has been a substantial market demand for many of these items. Some companies are just throwing together items to make a fast dollar, but the more compassionate ones actually try and bundle items that would otherwise be purchased separately, saving the buyer time and trouble.

There are a lot of new "medical" devices that haven't been proven, with no testing or thought behind them, but there are also several innovative devices designed specifically for the prevention of spread. As someone in the latter group, I have seen a masisve growth in conferences and programs aimed specifically at outbreak planning-things that didn't exist a few years ago. SARS changed the way we look at things considerably.

A lot of this change is mandated by government agencies as it appears that there is recognition that an "ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure".

Re: National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

add some antivirals and prepandemic vaccine to the kits !

Re: National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

i may sound polyanna but, i live in the country - redwoods and wine country of northern california...one of the lowest populated areas of california...we have....lots of stored 'birdflu food' and our own well...plus, my roommate works at the hospital (IT senior analyst) ... i feel pretty secure (okay, controlled terror most of the time)...

here's the thing: i've been getting at least 10 to 12 hits on my automatic google search for 'bird flu' every day...i know it's the season for it...but, i 'feel' something is up...

google-hits as pandemic indicator ?

reminds me, someone suggested China-satellite images and looking
for power-reductions.
Or number of WHO-telefone calls or number of cars
parking at the local agencies.
Or amount of Tamiflu being sold/ordered

There was an article recently about a computer system searching
for lots of such indicators.

Re: National Safety Council (U.S.) to Market Pandemic Flu Defense Kits

no...just 'bird flu' as a auto google search...

is there a way to track the movements and travel of WHO and CDC etc. personel? i don't mean stalking them, just find out if there is an upswing in travel? especially to areas such as indonesia, etc...

sorry - just being my usual paranoid self :reading: just want to know EVERYTHING all the time...

Welcome to FluTrackers, janetney.

You will find among threads and posts here a variety of researchers, analysts, newshounds, translators, watchers, and lurkers that monitor and sort through a great mass of information from around the world every day. These dedicated individuals are trying to understand patterns and indicators that might help identify the start of the next pandemic or the location of the next outbreak of a highly infectious disease.

While gsgs' comments may have seen to be made in jest, they do exemplify the range of indicators and indices that may be monitored by members here at FluTrackers and other flu forums as well.

not in jest. Some of the ideas may appear curios, funky, unusual -
but not too absurd to be thought about.
