Namibia records FMD case in six years

WINDHOEK, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia recorded first cases of foot and mouth disease within six years in the northern Namibia Kavango region, Chief veterinary officer Dr. Adrianatus Florentius Maseke said Thursday.

In a report filed with the World Organisation for Animal Health, Dr. Museke said the outbreak could be a result of wild animals, especially buffaloes...

Namibia steps up efforts to contain FMD outbreak

Namibia has ordered 500,000 vaccines from the Botswana Vaccine Institute as the country steps up efforts to contain a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak among cattle in north-central regions.

Deputy director of animal disease control in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF) John Shoopala said on Wednesday that the vaccines are expected in the country on Thursday.

In total, the government was expected to spend N$119 (about US$9.8 million) to vaccinate close to 1.2 million cattle in the regions that lie north of the veterinary cordon fence.

The ministry announced that the FMD outbreak, which was initially discovered in areas of Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions on 11 May, has since spread to other regions such as Omusati, Oshana, parts of Kavango West as well as northern Kunene.

According to the acting permanent secretary in the ministry Abraham Nehemiah, no outbreaks have yet been detected in the FMD-free and surveillance zones of Namibia, which is south of the veterinary cordon fence...
