Bird flu outbreak at Walvis Bay

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry's office at Walvis Bay has recorded cases of deadly avian flu in wild birds at Walvis Bay.

This follows reports of sick, dying or dead seabirds, including cormorants and Damara terns and other species, between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

More than 200 wild birds have been found dead along the coast by staff members of the Directorate of Veterinary Services.

The ministry's spokesperson, Jonas Musheko, confirmed the discoveries to The Namibian on Thursday...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
During active and passive surveillance, Wild birds are the ones affected thus far. The ones that are mainly affected are the Cape cormorants, with a few other wild birds also affected including Pelicans. Active and passive surveillance is currently on going to determine the extent of the outbreak. The common clinical signs found on the affected wild birds are tremors/shivering, staggering movements and swollen heads. Some sick birds showed signs of tameness and reluctance to flee from humans. Follow up reports will be submitted as soon as updates are received.
