The Epoch Times - a multi language Internet paper is reporting Nabro erupted in a Spanish edition. Its kinda strange both are large stratovolcanos [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovolcano ] and its looking like a rather large eruption that virtually no one has started covering. Dubbi has a history of very large eruptions and Nabro is a big volcano with no history of eruptions in the history of man.

Reports are coming in that one of the volcanoes of Eritrea, possibly Dubbi or Nabro, has erupted. Seismic records suggest three major events between 15:30 and 21:50 UTC on 12 June 2011. Loud explosions were heard in Afdera, across the border in Ethiopia, and ashfall is reported as far as Mekele in Tigray province. Dubbi?s eruption in 1861 is the largest documented historic eruption in Africa. Despite the sparse population in this part of the Danakil region, it reportedly killed 175 people, probably as a result of searing ?pyroclastic currents?. Nabro stratovolcano is the prominent volcano occurs in a line of NE-SW direction SW of Dubbi volcano here collectively named as Biddu or Nabro-Dubbi volcanic complex. The 2218 m high Nabro stratovolcano is the highest volcano in the Danakil depression and elsewhere in the eastern lowland. Nabro volcano (Figure 6) itself forms part of an enigmatic double caldera structure with a neighbouring volcano, Mallahle, which has a sub aerial volume of the order of 550 km3 (Wiart and
Oppenheimer, 2005). Trachytic lava flows and pyroclastic emplace primarily on the Nabro, followed by a post caldera rhyolitic obsidian domes and basaltic lava eruptions inside the caldera and on its flanks. Some very recent lava flows were erupted along NNW trending fissures transverse to the trend of the Nabbro-Dubbi volcanic range (Figure 7).

Eritrea volcano ash cloud hits flights

Scientists initially wrongly identified the source of the eruption in the region close to the Ethiopian border as the nearby Dubbi volcano.

"The ash's direction and its intensity were very high on Sunday, but this morning the Modis [monitoring] satellite shows a weakening," Atalay Arefe, natural sciences professor at Addis Ababa University, said. [ http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/06/2011614171314651149.html ]

Volcanic activity is continuing at the Nabro volcano in Eritrea, five days after the stratovolcano first sent an ash plume more than 15km into the air.

Another eruption on Thursday sent a massive ash plume westnorthwest over Sudan threatening to bring further disruption to air traffic in the east Africa region. Volcanic activity decreased overnight but a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning led to a further increase in volcanic activity...

Some early seismic activity recorded in May

Update: via the Earthquake Report, I?ve found a local seismometer network in Djibouti, the country south of Eritrea, which has the ability to pick up smaller earthquakes associated with the Nabro eruption. According to their page commenting on the eruption, although activity really kicked off on the 12th June, there was some seismic activity in the area in May ? around half a dozen approximately magnitude 2.5 earthquakes, mainly to the northwest of the Nabro caldera .... http://all-geo.org/highlyallochthonous/2011/06/seismo-volcanism-in-eritrea/

According to the Irish weather online site:

7 people have died while 3 people have sustained injuries due to the eruption. The Ministry confirmed that inhabitants of the area have been moved to safer locations while at the same time they are being given basic provisions.

After nearly a week of explosive activity, Eritrea?s Nabro Volcano seems to be evolving toward a milder, more effusive eruption. By June 19, 2011, the altitude of Nabro?s ash plume dropped from a maximum of 45,000 feet (14,000 meters) to 25,000 feet (7,600 meters), according to the Joint Air Force & Army Weather Information Network. The shrinking plume revealed a 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) lava flow, visible in this thermal infrared, false-color image.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard the Terra satellite observed Nabro on the evening of June 19. Hot areas are bright, and cold areas are dark. Thermal infrared data were combined with a shaded relief image to show the terrain. The white feature exending to the northwest is an active lava flow. A high-altitude plume, likely rich in water vapor, is nearly black, and obscures the erupting vents. A diffuse, ash-rich plume to the southwest of Nabro appears purple.
