2 more COVID-19 deaths reported in N.L., raising total to 52

Health officials in Newfoundland and Labrador say two more people have died as a result of COVID-19.

According to a news release Friday afternoon, one of the deaths was a man in his 70s in the Western Health region, while a man over the age of 90 in the Central Health region also died due to the virus.

The province has now reported 12 deaths since the beginning of February, and 52 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

A total of 267 new cases of COVID-19 were also reported Friday, including 167 in the Eastern Health region. There are also 44 cases in the Central Health region, 34 in the Western Health region and 22 in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.

Twenty-two people are in hospital as a result of the virus, down three from Thursday, with nine people in intensive care.

Reported recoveries were slightly lower than reported cases at 256, leaving 1,598 known active cases.

The total number of patients hospitalized because of COVID-19 increased to 24 on Saturday — up two from the previous day.

Saturday's update from the Department of Health and Community Services counted 244 new active known cases since Friday — 162 in the Eastern Health region, 33 in Central Health, 33 in Western Health and 16 in Labrador-Grenfell Health.

That brings the total number of known active cases to 1,649, meaning 193 people have recovered from the virus since the last update...

Two of the deaths were reported in the Central Health, a man in his 60s and a man in his 70s. There is also one death in the Eastern Health region, a woman in her 60s, and a man over the age of 80 died in the Western Health region...

Today (Tuesday, February 15), there are 14 people in hospital because of COVID-19, eight in non-critical care and six in critical care. There have been 225 new recoveries – 102 in the Eastern Health region, 71 in the Central Health region, 21 in the Western Health region and 31 in the Labrador-Grenfell region, and 18,809 people have recovered.
Newfoundland and Labrador has 213 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last update on February 14. Anyone who has tested positive must follow guidelines as outlined here. Today (Wednesday, February 16), there are 16 people in hospital because of COVID-19, 10 in non-critical care and six in critical care. There have been 176 new recoveries – 120 in the Eastern Health region, 24 in the Central Health region, 12 in the Western Health region and 20 in the Labrador-Grenfell region, and 18,985 people have recovered.

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting its fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, and sixtieth deaths from COVID-19. The individuals are all males over 80 years of age, one in the Eastern Health region and two in the Central Health region. The department is sending its condolences to the families of these individuals and asks everyone to respect the families’ privacy at this time.
Public Health has revised support person/visitor restrictions at all provincially operated acute care facilities, health centres and long-term care homes, as well as privately operated long-term care homes, personal care homes and community care homes. Effective February 10, 2022, two support persons/visitors for each patient/resident are permitted at these facilities. Information regarding the changes can be found here.
Anyone that is a close contact of a case and has symptoms of COVID-19, and anyone testing positive on a rapid test, should consider themselves a positive case and follow public health direction found here. They do not need any PCR testing to confirm. Employers are asked not to require a PCR test for this category of individuals.
PCR tests are still recommended for non-household close contacts who are fully vaccinated and do not have symptoms, and anyone that has symptoms but has not been identified as a close contact of someone that tested positive for COVID-19. Our Self-Isolation Assessment Tool can help you determine if you need to self-isolate or get tested.
As of February 5, 2022, there is no isolation for fully vaccinated travellers; however, they are required to take one rapid test each day for five days. There are no changes to the requirements for partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers.
All travellers coming to Newfoundland and Labrador, including Newfoundland and Labrador residents, are required to fill out a travel form found here. The travel form can be completed up to 30 days prior to the travel date. Please submit proof of your COVID-19 vaccination by uploading it to your form. Newfoundland and Labradors said Thursday the death toll from the COVID-19 has risen to 61, just a day after the province announced its plans to wind down public health restrictions over the next month.

The latest death involves a woman in her 70s who lives in the Western Health region, the Department of Health and Community Services said in a statement.

The province also reported 316 new cases of COVID-19, moving the known active caseload to 1,750, Meanwhile, it also reported 261 new recoveries.

Sixteen people are in hospital — the same as Wednesday — with five of those in critical care...

COVID-19 hospitalizations drop again in N.L., as province adds 234 new cases
No update to be provided over the weekend, says public health

Fewer people are in hospital due to COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador than in recent days, but the province continues to see a steady influx of new daily cases.

The Department of Health said in a news release Friday that it confirmed 234 new cases in the last 24 hours. The majority of those infections, 163, is in the Eastern Health region, 24 cases are in Central Health, 32 are in Western Health, and 15 are in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.

With 227 new recoveries since Thursday, that leaves the province with 1,757 known, active cases. Thirteen people are in hospital, down three from Thursday. Five people are in intensive care.

Just more than half a million COVID-19 tests have been administered since the pandemic began.

The next update won't come until Monday, as the Department of Health says it will switch to providing updates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning next week. The province used this update strategy before the Omicron wave began, when it started issuing updates on case numbers daily.

N.L. marks deadliest month of the pandemic for 2nd straight month, reporting 2 more COVID-19 deaths
Some public health restrictions loosened Monday

Two more people have died due to COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador since the Department of Health's last update on Friday, marking February as the province's deadliest month since the pandemic began.

Both deaths were reported in the Central Health region, a man over the age of 90 and a woman in her 70s. The deaths are the 22nd and 23rd of the month of February — passing the previous record of 21 COVID-19 deaths in one month set in January.

The number of hospitalizations has also increased since Friday, with 16 people in hospital as a result of the virus. Five people are in critical care.

The province is reporting 667 cases of COVID-19 since Friday, as the province is no longer updating case counts on the weekends. There were 306 new cases on Saturday, 124 new cases on Sunday and 237 new cases on Monday — a three-day average of 222 cases per day.

A total of 229 new recoveries are also being reported, bringing the province's known active case count to 1,749.

Public Health announced on February 16, 2022, a phased approach to lifting long-term public health restrictions. Effective today, the following restrictions are in effect:
  • Gatherings in your home are limited to no more than 25 people.
  • Formal gatherings are limited to no more than 50 per cent of the venue’s capacity. Physical distancing must be maintained.
  • Religious and cultural ceremonies that require proof of vaccination are limited to 75 per cent capacity. Those where proof of vaccination is not required are limited to 50 per cent capacity.
  • Public visitations are limited to 50 per cent capacity per room. Wakes held outside of a funeral home/place of worship are limited to 25 people.
  • Gym and fitness facilities are permitted to operate at 75 per cent capacity per room or ice surface.
  • Amateur individual and team sport and recreation activities may return to out-of-region competition. However, participants are limited to competition against one single team per day. Tournaments of any kind are not permitted.
  • Restaurants can open for in-person dining at 75 per cent capacity. Self-serve buffets are prohibited.
  • Bars and lounges can open at 50 per cent capacity as long as physical distancing can be maintained between patrons seated at adjacent tables. There is a maximum of 10 people per table. Dance floors are not permitted.
  • Retail stores, including those in shopping malls, have no restrictions.
  • Cinemas, performance spaces and bingo halls can operate at a maximum capacity of 50 per cent per room. Physical distancing must be maintained. Food and drink are permitted as long as physical distancing can be maintained between patrons who are not each other’s close, consistent contacts. Masks may only be removed to eat or drink.
