All of N.L. moves to Alert Level 3 as province adds 60 new cases of COVID-19
The province now has 223 active cases
CBC News · Posted: Dec 22, 2021 8:35 AM NT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

All of Newfoundland and Labrador is moving to Alert Level 3 effective midnight, as the number of COVID-19 cases in the province continue to skyrocket.

At a media briefing Wednesday morning, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald reported 60 new cases of the virus have been found since Tuesday's update — all of them under investigation.

It ties for the second-highest number of new cases the province has seen in a single day, and brings the province's active case count up from 30 to 223 in just one week.

It's the highest number of active cases in N.L. since mid February.

Fitzgerald said 37 of the new cases are in the Eastern Health region, 10 are in the Central Health region, 12 are in the Western region and one is in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.

There are now active outbreaks in western, central and eastern portions of the island Fitzgerald said, noting health officials anticipate the numbers will continue to rise given the infectiousness of the Omicron variant.

"Our fear is that if we start to see severe illness, it will overwhelm our health-care system which is already stretched," she said.

"We are pulling health-care staff from other areas to work on COVID response, and we cannot risk a surge in hospitalizations."

There have been 12 new recoveries, and no one is in hospital due to COVID-19...

Newfoundland and Labrador will be moving to a modified Alert Level 4 to deal with record COVID-19 numbers to begin 2022, the provincial government announced Monday.

The province reported 519 new cases — for the seventh straight day, a new single-day record — and its 20th death related to COVID-19. The active caseload is 2,925, also a new record.

"I know we all feel that we are done with COVID, but COVID is not quite done with us. Living with COVID means celebrating the good days and summoning all our grit and strength to persevere through the bad days," said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald at the provincial briefing Monday afternoon.

There are 276 new cases in the Eastern Health region, 125 in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region, 64 in the Central Health region, 43 in the Western Health region and 11 found through private testing where the region is unknown.

N.L. reports 493 new cases of COVID-19, first drop in daily total in more than a week
Active caseload rises to 3,254 as province returns to Alert Level 4 of public health restrictions

Newfoundland and Labrador is reporting 493 new cases of COVID-19 as the province enters a modified version of Alert Level 4, tightening public health restrictions to slow the spread of the fast-moving Omicron variant.

Tuesday's total is a slight drop in the number of reported cases, marking the first day the province hasn't recorded a new record high in eight days...

...The new case totals, offset by 164 reported recoveries, raise the province's active caseload to a new high of 3,254. One person is in hospital due to COVID-19.

Since Monday, 4,033 tests have been done, with a positivity rate of 12.2 per cent. Test positivity is the percentage of the COVID-19 tests performed that produced a positive result.

The higher the positivity rate the higher the amount of transmission, but doesn't necessarily reflect overall positivity in the general population, if a province isn't testing enough people or people aren't seeking out tests. The rate also does not include rapid test results, which are usually done by individuals and not reported to officials...
