China and Japan ?will not tolerate nuke test?

09 October 2006
By Alexa Olesen, Beijing
JAPAN and China agreed yesterday a North Korea nuclear test ?cannot be tolerated? and that Pyongyang should return unconditionally to six-party negotiations on its nuclear programme, the Japanese Prime Minister said yesterday.

Shinzo Abe, speaking to reporters at the end of a day of meetings in Beijing, said he and China?s President Hu Jintao agreed a North Korean nuclear test would be unacceptable.

?We need to prevent a nuclear North Korea,? Mr Abe said. ?We saw eye-to-eye that North Korea?s announcement of a nuclear test cannot be tolerated because it is a great threat to east Asia and the international community.?

N. Korea tests nuclear weapon
Last Updated: Sunday, October 8, 2006 | 11:28 PM ET
CBC News

North Korea has tested its first nuclear weapon, its official news agency reported on Monday.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that the test was successful and no radiation had leaked from the site.

The test took place at 10:36 a.m. local time (9:36 p.m. ET Sunday) near the city of Kilju, according to South Korean defence sources cited by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

News of the test followed a demand from China and Japan on Sunday that the communist country shelve the test.

North Korea said Tuesday that it would test an atomic weapon because of "the U.S. extreme threat of a nuclear war."

Following that statement, the UN, U.S. and other countries all asked that it not proceed.

Re: N. Korea performed 1st nuclear test

current Northern Hemisphere jet streams. Air over N. Korea is going 2 directions - one toward Japan and the other north to Kamchatka, then a downturn, then up to Alaska. Both streams join and go to Alaska.

I hope there are no leaks into the atmosphere!
