ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. ? Students in 12 schools in the Alamance Burlington School System have confirmed cases of whooping cough, or pertussis.

Alamance County health officials said they have confirmed 82 cases in six elementary schools, six middle schools and two private child care centers.

The affected elementary schools are B. Everett Jordan, Audrey W. Garrett, Haw River, South Graham, Alexander Wilson and Eastlawn.

The affected middle schools are Western Alamance, Graham, Broadview, Turrentine, Hawfields and Woodlawn.

Health officials would not identify the two private child care centers...

Free Vaccine Offered After 97 Confirmed Cases of Whooping Cough In Alamance County

Mebane, NC-- After 97 cases of whooping cough in Alamance County since mid-December 2011, the Alamance County Health Department held a community-wide Tdap vaccination clinic.

The clinic was Friday at the Mebane Arts and Community Center at 633 Corregidor Street in Mebane from 3:00-7:00pm. They administered 210 free vaccinations over the course of the clinic.

The current outbreak affects 14 schools and childcare centers in the area...

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. ? Randolph County has 15 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, and health director Mimi Cooper said many of the cases are related to the 129 cases in Alamance County.

?We can connect those children to each other. They?ve spent time with each other during the period the children were incubating the disease,? Cooper said.

Guilford County has had five cases of whooping cough in 2012. Cooper said those cases were also related to the Alamance outbreak, but the Guilford County Health Department could not confirm that...

Two cases of highly contagious pertussis at Rocky Point Elementary School were traced to a 6-month-old baby whose parents have religious exemptions from vaccinating their children, Pender County Health Director Carolyn Moser said Friday.

Whooping cough outbreak prompts warning in N.C.

An outbreak of pertussis, or whooping cough, has prompted North Carolina health officials to urge residents to be vaccinated against the disease.

Between December and the first week of June, 179 cases have been reported in 23 counties, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

Three cases have been reported in the Cape Fear region - one each in Lee, Sampson and Scotland counties, the agency said. The cases are concentrated in Alamance County, where 122 people have contracted the illness...

Alamance County has seen a record number of cases of pertussis, or ?whooping cough,? since last December, 122 cases in total.

In response to the outbreak, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is making the Tdap vaccine, which protects against pertussis, available to anyone age 7 years or older, regardless of whether or not they have health insurance.

The department is providing the Tdap vaccine to health care providers in the Immunization Program network, which includes all local public health departments and some public and private health care providers...

A statewide rise in the number of whooping cough cases has counties around Lake Norman stressing the importance of the vaccine for infants and adults.

According to North Carolina Health and Human Services Department officials, the number of cases in the state this year is about twice what it was a year ago.

On Aug. 20, the state reported the first infant death as a result of the disease, formally known as pertussis...

...As of Aug. 17, 354 cases of whooping cough had been diagnosed in the state...
