Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

The minister did not say how many pigs had died from the disease
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/PEK321363.htm

sounds as if they had asked him and he refused to answer

he should have commented on the 20 million from Guangxi-news.
But it's China ...

Several sources said there were 1 million dead pigs last year,
so there can hardly be 20 million this year in just a few months
without this getting more attention.
Please. Several source are just citing each other.

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

I have to admit, I'm a bit skeptical as well. We have only one source (or at least mutiple re-publications of the same source), with regards to the 20MM pigs. Unfortunately the lack of information from China causes these types of situations wheere we are left guessing at the correct answer, of which, we'll never truely know. The best we can hope for is something from Boxun or another similar source, however, they too have been very quiet. I do feel that if 20MM pigs died, Boxun..etc. would have published something.

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

Google is censored in China and is far from a good source on sensitive information in China.

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

pork prices could be interesting. We had it in the thread last
year, but thepigsite has discontinued to publish them.
Average prices for provinces or whole China would be fine.
I saw something like a 50% increase, AFAIR.

I also sent email to Dan Silver. Emails to China : Guangxi-news,
FIC all come back from mailer-daemon.

Sure, we all know that China is a under an information quarantine ;) MHSC, knows less than we do about what is going on in China, and she is there...she has to get info from here. Which is why we are only left to speculate, that is until something leaks out.

The pork prices post is very interesting.

I too will keep digging, hopefully not in vain, but you can feel the power of the Chinese censorship, when they want a story stopped, they shut off all the valves.

Babel Fish Translation Help

In English:
Yesterday 5 PM, arrived the resident to buy the vegetable prepares food, in front of a Guangzhou five sheep new towns meat grocer pork files gate is lonely, the shopkeeper anxiously rises, business desolate extremely helpless facing the meat price: "The meat price rises such anxiously, the resident is very difficult to adapt, I sold the resident not to be able to accept, sold cheaply has lost money, this business did not know how should do?" Core prompt Recently the domestic majority of local pork rise in price, our province partial areas pork market price similarly came under the influence. What is the pork rise in price reason? Next stage price trend how? Whether the our province department concerned can get rid of the intervention? Yesterday, in view of current social from all walks of life matter of concern, newspaper reporter invited the province price bureau and the agriculture department as well as some experts makes the analysis. The price 5 月精 lean meat same ratios rise 14.7%: Average every 500 grams 9.92 Yuan According to the province price bureau concerned people in charge introduced that, the pork rise in price question we also always pay attention and carry on are monitoring. Since the end of last year, our province meat, the egg price have continued to rise, this year 3, in April appears small to return to the accent, but in May continues to rise. The province price bureau demonstrated to the market price monitor result that, in May, the middle ten days, the entire province fresh pork (fine lean meat) every 500 grams average prices respectively are 9.84 Yuan, 10 Yuan, the monthly mean (count middle ten days) every 500 grams 9.92 Yuan, the same ratio rises 14.7%; The fresh pork (rib meat) every 500 grams average prices respectively are 7.96 Yuan, 8.02 Yuan, the monthly mean every 500 grams 7.99 Yuan, with compared to rises 20%, created the recent years live pig price to be highest. The province agriculture department from the cultivation, produces the link the investigation result and the market supplies price tallies. Our province live pig market started from last August to recover, after the experience mid-September the price peak gradually receded, after mid-October the price unceasingly rose, to this January in the last ten days of the month live pig price achieved the recent years high point □□entire province each place lean meat live pig price generally reached as high as 11.6 □12.0 Yuan/kilograms, some local prices 格曾 rose to 12.3 Yuan/kilograms. Raises the keeper of livestock to raise gains 300-400 Yuan/head, makes up the fence enthusiasm to surge upward, stimulates the pig seedling market the prosperity, 15 kilogram heavy lean meat pig seedling price approaches 400 Yuan/heads. At the beginning of this February starts, the pig price falls slightly, but in front of at the end of February still maintained 11.2 Yuan/kilogram about to compare the high price position. At the beginning of March, the pig price falls the scope to be obvious, the last ten days of the month price falls to March in to 10 Yuan/kilograms below, paces back and forth in 9.4-9.8 Yuan/kilograms between, but the peasant household raised the income still to be able to maintain 100-200 Yuan/head. Plants the pig and the pig seedling price also has falls, 50 kilograms body weights dual mixed sows selling price approximately 1,100 Yuan/heads, 15 kilograms body weights pigs Miao Diezhi about 340 Yuan/. Mid-April starts, the pig price starts to rise again, amounts to 10.2-10.8 Yuan/kilograms, 15 kilograms body weights pigs Miao Shengzhi about 370 Yuan/. The supply and demand majority of live pigs supply from the other provinces: The rise in price affects our province The province price bureau concerned person in charge stated that, this year comes the live pig market fluctuation, is creates by the market supply and demand relations change. Our province majority of areas live pig's supply from Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi and so on is close to the province, the market supplies price mainly the live pig habitat influence. Because recently the domestic majority of local pork rise in price affected our province. According to the analysis, causes our province pork rise in price mainly to have three big factors. One, raises the pig cost rise. Since last year second half year, because by the grain primarily agricultural and subsidiary products price large rise, the feed price also unceasingly climbs along with it. Two is because our province the last July partial areas appeared (live pig) the high fever to cause the partial sows death, the young pig supply reduced, the sow death also caused the fault, this need certain time restoration. Three was last year domestic majority of raises the pig household to lose money, dampens the partial farmers to raise the pig enthusiasm, many people to raised the pig to hold the attitude of wait and see, the market supplies obviously reduce, impel the live pig purchase price rise. Looked on our province itself pig-breeding industry, before last August approaches the pig which 1 year live pig ebb tide time as well as the partial local for more than half year erupts "the high fever" to our country pig-breeding industry attack to be bigger, many raises the keeper of livestock or because loses seriously continues without the fund to invest, or because fears the epidemic disease risk to reproduce the confidence to change professions insufficient, the sow amount of livestock on hand and the live pig leave the pen comparatively front has the certain degree to drop. Prospect our province pig-breeding industry superiority prominent: The live pig year gap reaches 25 million heads Some experts analyze believed that, our province live pig price can maintain in the certain time is comparing the high level, cannot be lower than 10 Yuan/kilograms. Because the feed host raw material price stays at a high level, at present the cost has amounted to 8.0-9.0 Yuan/kilograms. The professional analyzes pointed out that, at present, our province live pig year gap reaches 25 million heads, in the live pig price height suitable degree is decided outside the province the live pig calls in the quantity and the price. Although our province live pig raising man-power, the feed cost relative are higher, but unceasingly is reducing with the south Zhu Sheng disparity. Moreover, uses the fixed asset investment and other expenses unceasing growths along with the cultivation, this kind raises the pig cost disparity not to be more and more obvious. The experts when accept newspaper reporter the interview pointed out, greatly rises in the present nation live pig price in situation, our province pig-breeding industry superiority then more and more prominent, like production efficiency higher, the market superiority is obvious, does not have the other provinces pig to enter the transportation cost, the body weight loss which our province must pay. Therefore, the nation raises the pig situation as well as the passive epidemic disease and so on aspect and so on many kinds of factors influence looked, in the short-term the live pig market cannot 供过于求. The expert suggested that, second half year starts, is precisely our province raises the pig household greatly unfolds the fist foot time, our province live pig cultivation prospect should favor. The measure dynamically pays attention to the market to investigate rigorously drives up the price: Legally investigates harasses the market behavior The province price bureau concerned person in charge stated, in the near future the pork price greatly will rise situation, although will be the normal market supply and demand relations to cause, but the pricing department will not be able to stand by, will monitor the result according to the near future to demonstrate, each place still did not have artificially to drive up the meat price the situation. But, this person in charge indicated that, will make pays attention to the market price tendency, practically will strengthen the market to do an inspection, like the discovery will drive up the price, harasses the market order the illegal activity, legally will give to investigate. Moreover, through each way, will guide the consumer to be correct, rationally regards the meat price rise question, will cause the market health development. The Guangzhou 经贸委 concerned person in charge also indicated, since the end of last year meat price rise, the government department concerned all in continuously closely has paid attention. Will rise once more regarding the short-term meat price, the department concerned will continue to pay attention to the meat price development tendency, in the essential situation will be able to appear the corresponding measure, in special need situation, also will be able to consider the start country reserve meat. Chief-editor: Wcl makes the commentary Exempts the responsibility to state that,

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

Here is the same story translated by Google:

May pigs highest prices in recent years creators need to activate the special reserve meat

At five o'clock yesterday afternoon, the public has to buy vegetables for cooking, Guangzhou Metro Wuyang a Meat Market in front of the stalls featured pork, the meat stall owners face a sharp rise in prices, the business is very poor helpless : "meat sold in such a rush, the public is very difficult to adapt to, I sold your people can not accept and sell cheaper on the losses, I do not know how to do this business? "

Core Presentation

Most of the recent domestic pork prices to rise, parts of the province pork market prices will also be affected. The increase in the price of pork What is the reason? The next phase of the price trend? Zhejiang departments will sell intervene? Yesterday, in view of current community concerns, this reporter asked the provincial Commodity Prices and the Agriculture Department, and some experts for analysis.

May prices precision lean up 14.7% over the same period last year : an average of 500 grams of 9.92 yuan

According to the provincial Commodity Prices person in charge, the increase in the price of pork issue, we also have concerns and monitors. Since the end of last year, the province meat, eggs, the continuous price rises in this year 3,4 Slight callback, But May has continued to rise.

Provincial Commodity Prices on the market price monitoring results show that in May, in mid - the province of fresh pork (exquisite lean meat) per 500 grams for the average price of 9.84 yuan, 10 yuan, On average (the middle of the statistics) every 500 grams of 9.92 yuan, rising 14.7% fresh pork (ribs meat) per 500 grams for the average price of 7.96 yuan, 8.02 yuan. On average every 500 grams of 7.99 yuan, an increase of 20%, setting a maximum price of pigs in recent years.

Provincial Agriculture Department from breeding, production processes, findings and the market price is more in line. Live pigs from the province last year, the market started to recover in August, experienced in mid-September after the peak prices come down gradually, In mid-October after the continuous rise in prices. 1 of the year in mid - to late pig prices reached a peak in recent years -- across the province lean pig prices as high as 11. 6-12.0 yuan / kg, the prices in some areas have risen to 12.3 yuan / kg. Keeping families raising profits 300-400 yuan / head, Bulan enthusiasm high, Piglet stimulate the market flourished. 15 kilograms of lean Piglet close to the price of 400 yuan / head.

The beginning of this year, slightly lower price, But before the end of February remained 11.2 yuan / kg higher price. Early March, the price decrease significantly, the end of the three months the price drop to 10 yuan / kg, In 9.4-9.8 million / kg between a nagging, but farmers remain keeping receipts 100-200 yuan / head. Pigs and Piglet prices also fell, the 50 kg weight miscellaneous binary sows at about 1,100 yuan / head, Piglet 15 kg weight dropped to 340 yuan / head around. In mid-April, the price began to rise, reaching 10.2-10.8 million / kg, Piglet 15 kg body weight to 370 yuan / head around.

Most of the supply and demand supply of live pigs from the mainland : price increases affected province

Provincial Commodity Prices Condemns pig this year to market volatility, the market is supply and demand caused by changes. Zhejiang most areas of live pigs from suppliers in Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and other neighboring provinces. the market price of live pigs marked mainly by the impact. 。As recently most of the domestic pork price hikes affected province. According to the analysis, resulting in price increases pork province there are three major factors.

First, the pigs increased costs. Since the second half of last year, mainly due to the provision of significant increases in the price of agricultural and sideline products, feed prices have also continued to climb. Second, as our province in July last year in parts of the (pig) high fever makes some sows death, The reduction in supply of piglets, sows death also led to the fault, which needs some time to recover. last year, most pig-raising households loss, and dampen some of the pig farmers enthusiasm, Many people hold the pig wait-and-see attitude, the market significantly reduce the supply, and promote the purchase price of pigs rose.
Our province's pig industry, In August last year, nearly a year before the pig troughs, and some areas more than half a year to the outbreak of the pig "high fever" on China's pig industry hit than many households or farmers suffered heavy losses due to no funds to invest, or because of fear of the disease risk to reproduction and the lack of confidence in other trades. Sow herds and slaughter pigs over there is a certain degree of decline.

Prospects province pig outstanding : pigs, the gap reached 25 million

Some experts have analyzed that the prices of live pigs in the province within a certain period of time will remain at a relatively high level, not less than 10 yuan / kg. As the main feed raw materials prices have remained high, the cost has reached 8.0-9.0 yuan / kg.

Industry analysts pointed out that at present, the province in the areas of live pigs 25 million. Pig price level depends to a considerable extent on the redeployment of Foreign pigs volume and price. Although artificial breeding pigs province, the relatively high cost of feed, but with the southern provinces in the gap continued to narrow. Moreover, as used in aquaculture investment in fixed assets and other costs of growth, the gap between the cost of this pig increasingly little.

Experts in an interview with this reporter, noted that the current national pig prices have soared circumstances, province's pig industry is increasingly obvious advantages, such as more efficient production, marketing advantages are obvious. no mainlander pig into our province must pay the cost of transportation, weight loss. Therefore, the National Pig on the situation of animal diseases as well as a variety of other factors, such as side effects, shortly pigs not oversupply the market. Experts suggest that the second half is our province to expand their pig-raising households, pig farming province should be good prospects.

Measures attention to the market dynamics prosecute gas prices : investigating the market disruption

Provincial Commodity Prices Condemns recent pork prices soared situation, Although the market is a normal relationship between supply and demand has led, but prices will not stand idly by departments, According to recent monitoring results show that there is no around the artificially inflated price of meat. However, the official said, will pay close attention to the market price developments, and effectively strengthen inspections found inflated prices, disturb the market order offenses will be dealt with according to law. In addition, through various means, and guide consumers correct, rational view of rising meat prices, and to the healthy development of the market.

Guangzhou Economic and Trade Commission, the responsible person said that since the end of last year, rising meat prices, The government departments concerned have been paying close attention. Turning to the recent rise in price of meat, the relevant departments will continue to focus on the meat price trends, where necessary measures will be introduced. the special needs of the circumstances, we will consider launching national reserves meat.

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

Increase in the price of pork involves four factors

According to the Ministry of Agriculture "agricultural products wholesale markets nationwide information network" Monitoring, National 286 agricultural products wholesale pork, eggs price May 23 to Wei Zhang. And on the 22nd of pork, eggs integrated with the average price of 15.38 yuan per kg and 6.59 yuan. respectively soar in 1996 and 2004, its highest point since.
According to the departments of agriculture and statistics provided by the material, the current trend in the price of pork "involved" at least four factors.

Pork prices and seasonal factors. Ministry of Agriculture forecasts that because of the festive and seasonal decline in consumption demand, the cattle and mutton prices will decline. China's meat consumption is obvious seasonal variation, the winter low temperature, rather brisk consumption, high summer temperatures, weaker consumer demand. After the Spring Festival, the festival made to reduce consumption in March cattle mutton prices slipped somewhat. According to the "National Price system cost survey network" information is the second quarter, the temperature remained low. make pork consumption to extend the season as pork prices raise a factor that can not be ignored. Pork future price movements and seasonal temperatures relations concern.

Pork and other meat products seafood alternative effects. Currently rising prices of pork, beef and mutton has driven prices with inflation, which can be viewed as a chain reaction, can be regarded as a substitution effect. According to the report, May 22. Cover the Beijing's Baligiao Baitiao pork market average wholesale price of 15.70 yuan per kilogram, compared with nearly 11% last week, over the same period last year rose 109%. Cover market information office said in pork prices have continued to rise while fish prices reliable, grass carp, Lei Yue price stability, carp price is still a small decline, which lead to losing.

Feed prices and continuing influence. April Ministry of Agriculture and the National animal feed price trend analysis that Feed costs would rise substantially is the main animal product prices climbing higher and higher the important driving forces. Corn and fish meal is breeding owners to feed raw materials. Since 2006, corn and fish meal imports continued to maintain the overall price trend rose only slightly in the individual callback. April corn price for four consecutive months at 1.5 yuan over the past 10 years since the historical peak. Feed raw materials price hikes, and promote the culture of direct costs and rising prices of animal products. "Price systems nationwide network cost survey" found that the current industrial use of corn ethanol production, aquaculture industry to a certain impact. With the nation on corn into ethanol projects in macro-control policies promulgated. together with the current domestic and international markets energy prices and industrial demand for corn is relatively stable, aquaculture industry demand for maize little change, the recent corn prices continue to move up the possibility, but will remain on the high end. This will be the price of live pigs a sustained impact.

Pig prices cyclical changes. Pig price volatility is a cycle every four years, during which period can be divided into the market upsurge, the downturn period, troughs and recovery period. Price System surveyed nationwide cost" from the survey data analysis, since 2004 price increases down, This is also a period of rising prices. Therefore, the appropriate guide farmers to increase the scale pig farming, but also to avoid rushing all pig farmers, lead to overproduction and suffered losses, it is gradually moving production of live pigs virtuous circle orbit a key issue.

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

I'm not sure what they mean with the 25million heads gap.
But it can't be that 25million pigs are missing in Zheyiang,
since there are only about 20 million pigs in Zheyiang.

There was a short article in the Canada .pdf , where they
speak about 1 million culls in China last year:

China Swine fever fears continued to affect buying interest in some regions. New-born piglets as well as those that were about one month old were particularly prone to the virus infection. Nevertheless, farmers were seen taking extra precaution in disease prevention to avoid potential losses. Those producers who are optimistic about improved hog prices have started to replenish piglets after mid-week December. With improved hog prices, the recent increase in feed prices had become less of a factor of consideration in farmers' plans to replenish piglets, as gain in income will offset the increase in production cost. Medium-sized commercial farms were more active in buying piglet supplies than backyard farmers.
...
Deadly diseases sweeping through China's hog farms CHINA - "Pig Fever" is sweeping through the expanding Chinese swine industry, according to swine veterinarians who have traveled there this fall. University of Nottingham, England, swine veterinarians Steven McOrist and Stan Done observed the outbreak first-hand during a recent visit to China's swine veterinary centers. China's hog industry is "rapidly consolidating" on a scale similar to that in the U.S., McOrist says. This includes the segmentation of farrowing and finishing, with 500- to 1,000-head sowbarns and "routine off-site finishing" popping up around Chinese cities. Comprising a possible combination of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and other diseases, this year's "Pig Fever" outbreak has swept through this growing number of Chinese finishing facilities, resulting in more than 1 million culls

Prices of pork and eggs kept soaring over past weeks on Chinese market due largely to tightened supply and increasing production cost.
Sources with the Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday that if the prices remain high, the country's consumer price index (CPI), a major indicator for inflation, will be affected. CPI reached the alarm level of three percent in April.
Food products account for 33 percent of CPI in China, and meat, poultry and related products, about 20 percent.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in April live pigs nationwide were priced 71.3 percent higher than a month earlier, and pork, 29.3 percent higher.
In Beijing, price of slaughtered pigs went up more than 30 percent in recent days, while that of eggs rose to record high for past five years.
Wholesale price of pork in Shanghai has hit 16 yuan (2.1 U.S. dollars) per kilogram, a record high for recent 10 years, up 20 percent month-on-month.
The wholesale price was even higher in Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province.
"I bought the pork at 17 yuan/km from a distributor on Monday, and the price kept changing day by day. I have no other choice but raise retail price," complained Jin Qiuhua, a local retailer, at a pork stand in a marketplace of Maolang Lane, Hangzhou.
"I've sold pork for more than 20 years, such a continuous price hike was only seen in 1994," said Lu Youzhong, another pork retailer in the city.
Along with temperature hikes, blue ear disease, also known as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), broke out among pigs in south China's Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, causing many deaths and a large amount of pigs to be culled, according to the National Development and Reform Commission. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, which is in charge of agricultural production and animal husbandry, declined to make any comment on the issue. :magnify:
The outbreak can be seen as an immediate cause of a short supply in the regions, which need to buy pigs from northern provinces, according to Xu Lianzhong, a senior economist with the price supversion center under the National Development and Reform Commission.
"This sent a strong signal for distributors to jack up prices," said Xu.
Xu said this had exacerbated the unbalanced supply and demand of recent years.
"Pig raisers kept making losses over the past couple years and they are reluctant to raise pigs. This led to a marginal decline in population of live pigs for the current year."
Still worse, edible oil and grains underwent price hikes at the beginning of this year, and feed prices followed suit. The mounting raising cost for pigs and poultry brought about price hikes for pork and eggs, according to Xu.
Grain prices, which are expected to be affected by a decline in output this summer, would continue to increase slightly in the coming weeks, boosting prices of pork and eggs, Xu said.
Price of eggs rose 30.9 percent in April, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Xu predicted that egg prices would soon stabilize as egg supplies could be replenished quickly, but it was unlikely that pork prices would fall in the next one or two months due to the longer production cycle.
However, Xu said, pork prices have already peaked and have little room to rise further.
Some government departments are reportedly dispatching inspectors to pork markets around the country to investigate price rises indicating growing official concern at the increases.
Sources with the Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday that the ministry is taking measures to ensure market demand for pork could be met.
Li Xizhen, head of market monitoring and regulation section under the Ministry of Commerce said, "The Ministry will follow closely changes on the pork market. National pork reserves will be used if it is necessary."
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China produced 17.73 million tons of pork in the first quarter of this year, up three percent year-on-year, and recorded a population of 467 million live pigs, down 0.3 percent.:tiphat: http://www.jongonews.com/articles/07/0524/16193/MTYxOTM97VpjpKv.html

they only speak about GD and GX, while Guangxi-News spoke about
20 million dead pigs in 6 provinces

that doesn't sound as if 20million pigs could have died of (high fever disease)=(blue ear disease)=(PRRS)
until then. The number for the 2nd quarter will be interesting.
Could it really be 4% down now due to PRRS ? And if yes, why doesn't it produce more attention
as compared to last year ?

bird flu ?

prices for 1kg life pork :
March 2006 : 6.50
June 2006 : 6.30
August 2006 : 5.00
October 2006 : 8.00
December 2006 : 10.00
May 2007 : 16.00

general inflation : 3% per year

> 30Mar:10.00
> 5.Apr:9.60
> 15.Apr:10.50

** uhh, it seems the above prices were per kg, while the 7.99 was per 500g ! So multiply the last
one by 2 !

Re: Mystery disease kills pigs in Southern China: press

From the Beijing Newspeak blog:

So someone?s telling porkies ?
May 24, 2007

Oh dear, it?s happening again. A glimpse of the bad old days. The days when Chinese state media report statistics that are so patently misleading, all the progress made in the timely reporting of bird flu cases is shot to pieces and international suspicion is once again well and truly aroused.

Embarrassing figure number one: 300. This is the number of pigs Xinhua reported on May 10 to have died from blue ear disease in southern China. At the time, AP quoted Hong Kong media as saying 1,300 pigs had been infected. Even this figure was put in the shade by a highly informative Reuters report on May 18, which claimed one million pigs had been wiped out over the last year in various parts of China.
The only place the Chinese government has publicly acknowledged the latest outbreak is Yunfu in western Guangdong province, a 5-1/2-hour train and road trip from Hong Kong.

Officials say some 300 swine died in and around the collection of villages that make up the township of Silao, which is part of Yunfu.

However, a drive through the countryside lends credence to the belief that the official number of swine deaths is low.

Before the outbreak, many farmers, perhaps most, kept a pig or two on family plots, locals said. Many, like Zhu, kept litters that numbered in the dozens.

Not a single pig was seen in more than two hours in the area talking to farmers and feed sellers.
Still not a word from Xinhua. The previous day, China?s agriculture ministry had called on local authorities to do more to curb the spread of the disease.
We face a severe situation in prevention as it is the peak outbreak season of the highly contagious blue ear disease,? agriculture minister Sun Zhengcai said in a speech.

?If the disease was not properly controlled, the pig breeding industry, income of farmers and stability of the pork market would be badly hurt,? Sun told a national conference.
But Xinhua missed the statement. I have banged on all week about the need to write something on the issue, preferably a report of the latest situation in Guangdong by the bureau based in the province. Otherwise, silence just shouts ?cover-up!? As far as I know there has been no official instruction banning the reporting of blue ear disease from Guangdong. It seems the bureau there is just refusing to report anything. Nothing new to write, it says. Is it being gagged by the local government or is it just being incredibly lazy? I have no idea.

So, while the one million figure (the number for the whole year) - in fact I feel I need to put it into numbers for extra effect: 1,000,000 - is freely banded around the international press, Xinhua last reported 300. And then comes a direct consequence of the epidemic - the price of pork ?flies to a new high? according to a report by the China Daily. It was a woeful piece of journalism. Apparently the price of pork had risen ?due to a decrease in the number of pigs? but there was not one mention of blue ear disease in the story. Instead the blame was placed on the rise in corn price and this hilarious reason:
He (Zhang Zhiqiang from the Jinan pricing administration) said the demand for vegetables normally increases in summer, and people also have the choice of beef, mutton, chicken and fish, which are in abundant supply.
The article also noted ?a supermarket salesman in Beijing said fewer people are buying pork this week?. So is that because it is too expensive or is it down to a mysterious pig disease that Beijingers have heard about but know nothing about?

Finally, on Wednesday evening, Xinhua releases a story. The news point was buried but this is it:
Along with temperature hikes, blue ear disease, also known as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), broke out among pigs in south China?s Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, causing many deaths and a large amount of pigs to be culled, according to the National Development and Reform Commission. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, which is in charge of agricultural production and animal husbandry, declined to make any comment on the issue.

The outbreak can be seen as an immediate cause of a short supply in the regions, which need to buy pigs from northern provinces, according to Xu Lianzhong, a senior economist with the price supversion center under the National Development and Reform Commission.

?This sent a strong signal for distributors to jack up prices,? said Xu.
Still no figure, but now the Ministry of Agriculture is refusing to comment. Xinhua 300, Reuters 1,000,000. NB I?m finding the updates provided by Pig Progress - ?Your portal on global pig production? - on this subject to be concise and informative....

Re: Porcine reprod & resp syndr - China (Guangdong): OIE
--------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if anyone has included African swine fever [ASF] in
diagnostic investigations of the syndrome. It is not only clinically
and pathologically virtually indistinguishable from classical swine
fever but has a demonstrated record of ability to spread globally.
China has a strong and increasing presence in Africa where the
disease is widespread and it is not beyond the realm of possibility
that a returning worker could have brought back some infected pork as
happened in Belgium some years ago.

[The disease, which obtained in China the name "High fever disease"
since its 1st known detection in mid-2006, was initially attributed
to a mix infection of PRRS, classical swine fever (CSF) and porcine
circovirus (PCV-2), and probably additional agents; see China's
notification to the OIE of 14 Sep 2006, included in posting
20060924.2732. According to the recent Chinese notification to the
OIE of 9 May 2007, a similar syndrome in Guandong was "probably
caused by highly pathogenic Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory
Syndrome (PRRS) virus" while "laboratory diagnosis was ongoing".
ProMED-mail commented that the apparent case fatality rate (20
percent) hardly fits the description "sub-clinical" used in the
notification, and underlined the need for additional data on the PRRS
virus, currently circulating in vast areas of China and Vietnam, and
for the exclusion of other disease agents such as avian influenza
and classical swine fever (CSF); see commentary in archived 20070514.1533.

Dr. Roeder's suggestion to include ASF virus in the diagnostic
investigations of the syndrome is justified, particularly since the
"High fever disease," according to unofficial sources, has been
observed during the past several months in more than 7 provinces of
China killing more than 20 million pigs,
while the official OIE
notification of 9 May 2007 referred to one province (Guandong).

For details on Belgium's ASF outbreak in 1985, see Mod PC's
commentary in posting Classical Swine Fever (CSF) -

Hong Kong butcher had pig-borne disease - paper

HONG KONG, May 26 (Reuters) - A part-time Hong Kong butcher has become the third victim of the pig-borne disease Streptococcus suis in the territory in less than a month, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday.

The article said the 54-year-old man developed fever, headache and neck pain nearly two weeks ago, but was admitted to hospital only on Tuesday and was stable yesterday.
It added that the victim helped sell pork at several markets.
All three cases in the territory were diagnosed within the past eight days and are believed to have been contracted locally, the report said.
While the patient had spent a day in the mainland Chinese city of Shenzhen early this month, the trip "may not be related" to the disease, the paper quoted an unnamed health official as saying.
There have been no reported cases on the Chinese mainland since a deadly outbreak in 2005, the article said. It added that the bacterial infection is rarely fatal in humans, but an unusually virulent strain killed more than 30 people in Sichuan province in 2005.
Eight cases were reported last year in Hong Kong, with 13 -- two of them fatal -- in 2005.
Pork prices have soared in mainland China after an outbreak of blue ear disease, or Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) which surfaced a year ago. Experts and industry sources have said it wiped out as many as a million pigs.
