BALASORE/JAJPUR, 17 SEPT: A large number of people of two remote villages ~ Chaka Padmapur and Bindha Padmapur, under Hugli gram panchayat of Bhograi block are suffering from a mysterious disease with symptoms of elephantiasis.
The abnormality among the young people above 30 years of age, while can commonly be seen in these two villages with population of nearly 1000 (around 170 families) the victims complain of spinal joint and other joints related pains too due to ailments. Even several members of a single family can be seen with deformity, informed sources.
While majority of the population are of BPL category, they eke out living out of fishing activities.
Mr Chaitanya Das, Mrs Sumati Patayat, Mrs Madi Gangei, Mr Bhanu Gangei, Mrs Bani Mandal, Mr Sania Gangei, Mrs Sukhia Gangei, Mrs Radha Gangei are few of them of these two these said villages are suffering owing to swollen legs and feet.
?These villages are known as villages of elephantiasis as a large number of people are suffering from the abnormalities when one can find several members of a single family affected,? informed Mr Satyabrata Pradhan.
The disease surfaced in sea side villages, while is said to be the filaria, others observe it is due to consumption of water having more salinity and excess sea fish.
Chief district medical officer (CDMO) Dr Brajamohan Patra and Jaleswarpur CHC doctor Dr BK Das expressed his ignorance in the matter and further maintained that the symptoms indicated that it was filaria.
?We have no such information with us. We would conduct the mass blood sample test in the said villages besides we would concentrate more on the villages and around during observance of mass drugging of filaria in the district,? informed Dr Patra.
Meanwhile, panic gripped Kabatabandha area under Dharmasala block in Jajpur district with at least four people succumbing to a mysterious disease over the last two weeks.
Residents of Rekhideipur, Paika-rapur, Kadam Patana and Raichanda villages of Kabatabandha area are very tensed over the alleged deaths.
According to villagers, the two of four killed because of the unidentified ailment were youths. The main symptoms of the disease are body itching and then in some days the victims lose the power to speak, they added.
The incident was first reported in Paikarapur village following the death of Tilotama Rout (34), wife of Mr Sanatan Rout on 31 August. Then Khatu Swain (71) of the same village died on 10 of this month. Bhandari Mallik (39) of neighbouring Kadampatana Harijan Sahi village died two days after the death of Khatu. The last victim was Madhu Malik (70) of Kadampatana Harijan Sahi village who died yesterday.
?People are very panicky over the death as because the residents have failed to identify the disease,? said Rakhideipur sarpanch
After being informed by the local Sarpanch, medical officer of Dharmasala CHC, Mr Bijay Kumar Satapathy accompanied by a doctor from Kabatabandha hospital and Dharmasala BDO visited the village on Tuesday and took stock of the situation.
