Mysterious disease kills cattle

KARWAR: People of Vokkalakeri at Binaga area here, who bore the brunt of floods and landslips in the first week of October, are facing a new problem
now: their livestock and cattle are dying due to a mysterious disease.
Ramesh Gowda, who was in the forefront of rescue operations during the floods, said over five cattle have died in Vokkalakeri alone in the last three days because of the disease. Poor farmers, who have lost their house and crop in the flood, are worried over their future.
"The government gave a meagre amount to those who lost their houses. Even for a pucca house, only Rs 2,000 compensation was paid. Most of the people here belong to backward Halakki Vokkaliga community and are poor. Their kaccha houses, being built with mud, collapse easily. With the losses mounting, they are worried," he added.
Ramesh said that a calf and an ox of Bheema Gouda, one pregnant cow belonging to Rama Gouda, and an ox of Vekataraman Gouda have died. Almost all of them met their end with a swollen stomach. The veterinary doctor who visited the spot suspected food poisoning as the cause, said Nagesh Gouda, a farmer.
Madhav Naik, a social worker, said that the chemical released by a nearby factory during the floods could be reason for the death of cattle. He said the mixing of large quantities of the chemical with the water and the grass which the cattle grazed on resulted in their deaths.
He urged the government to supply fresh grass to avert further loss. He urged the district administration to provide medical aid to the animals so that people can earn from them. He also sought suitable compensation to the owners of the animals which died due to "food poisoning".
