In Daai Region 2, situated at the junction of Matupi, Mindat, and Kanpetlet townships in Chin State, seasonal flu cases are steadily increasing, and locals report that access to medicine is limited.
“So far, there have been no fatalities, but the number of people falling ill is rising rapidly, almost like an epidemic. At the same time, the cost of transporting medicines is very high, which has caused drug prices to soar. Medicines are now costing four to five times more than usual, creating major challenges for the treatment sector. The current situation has been reported to the regional administration, and the biggest struggle right now is simply obtaining the necessary medicines,” a Daai Region 2 resident told Chin World.
Daai Region 2 is also facing a surge in mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever and malaria. Both children and adults are affected, and over the past four months, five children have died from these illnesses.
Schools in the region were temporarily closed during a spike in malaria and dengue fever that had claimed the lives of children, but they reopened on September 22 after no further deaths were reported.
Daai Region 2, as its name suggests, is predominantly inhabited by Daai people. The area saw a spike in seasonal flu cases around June, which later subsided, but infections have been increasing again since the second week of September.
