Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne infection that peaks during Burma?s wet season has struck Karen children early this year. A government health official told Karen News that the number of children in Pa-an, the capital of Karen State, presenting with dengue are high.

Dr Win Naing, the Burma government?s health director for Karen State, explained to Karen News that while malaria rates are stable, ?the infection rate for dengue fever has increased. Between January and March [2013], according to our statistics, 97-people had been infected ? there are other patients who may be infected who have not been recorded...?

Over 800 children receive medical treatment for dengue fever

Over 800 patients are now suffering from dengue fever and are receiving medical treatments in Yangon Children?s Hospital and Yankin Children?s Hospital during the first four months, according to the Medical Superintendents.

Although outbreaks of dengue fever usually occur every year in Myanmar, the most in the middle of the monsoon season in June, July and August, the number of dengue fever patients has risen up within four months.

"In this year, there are many patients who are suffering from dengue fever. 511 patients are being received medical treatment during four months. Among them, one has died. Most of the patients are living in Yangon and its neighboring areas. The health departments under the Health Ministry are planning to carry out the preventive measures against dengue fever," Dr.Than Htike , Medical Superintendent from Yangon Children's Hospital said.

Nearly 1,500 dengue fever patients have received medical treatment in Yangon Children's Hospital during two years ago...

Burma Faces Dengue Fever Outbreak This Year: Officials

RANGOON ? Burma?s health authorities warn that the country could be in the grips of a dengue fever epidemic, as the number of reported cases this year has already surpassed the total amount of patients in the whole of 2012.

The Ministry of Health said on Friday that data collected from clinics and hospitals showed that 6,448 people have been infected with the mosquito-borne virus so far and 13 patients have died.

Last year, the ministry recorded 6,033 dengue cases and 27 deaths...

Ministry say dengue cases highest in Yangon Region, Kayin and Mon states

The number of recorded dengue infections this year has soared past 8000, with 16 confirmed deaths, a Ministry of Health official said last week.

Mon and Kayin states and Yangon Region have had the highest rates of infection, said Dr Ni Ni Aye, the deputy director of the Dengue Department, which comes under the ministry?s Disease Control Unit.

This year is likely to be worse than 2010, when more than 16,000 cases and 100 deaths were recorded, she said on July 17...
